The incentive for Amazon to collect taxes in Alabama is that they they can charge the full 10% sales tax (or whatever your local rate is), then Alabama says that as long as Amazon will turn the tax in on time, the state will give them a 2% rebate.
So, basically Amazon makes 2% profit on every sale, just by charging you sales tax

That's some real horseshite if true.

I hate taxes in general, but if a brick and mortar retailer has to collect them, so to should online marketplaces. Even shitty things like taxes should be applied evenly.

Oh I agree.

Then we should be getting a rebate for paying at time of checkout.

My only consolation is that I own some Amazon stock.

I sell on eBay and the tax is collected by ebay. We don't get any of it and we have to pay extra tax on income made from the sales. Talk about the government double dipping on our money!!!
So the buyer pays sales tax on the sale and the seller pays income tax on the income. Like literally every other recorded transaction.

Motor fuel excise taxes work in a similar way.

Wasn't sure when it started. Just got smacked myself on some purchases.

Will be interesting to see if it effects their sales and stock price.

Are you sure it's 2% off the sales amount (net of 8% tax paid) and not 2% of the 10%?

I file sales taxes for Alabama and I get the rebate for early filing and I WISH it was 2% of the sales!

Maybe Amazon has a deal with the them that I don't get???
