Rock music requires that a group play together for some time and generate their own music.

The modern model is like Hollywood, there are songs (scripts) already written and they just search for the right actor (singer) to sing it. With auto tune they can do this solely off marketing parameters.

Way less hassle than dealing with a rock band which may/may not break up at anytime.

No, I've just learned to avoid the pop music the major labels force upon us. Lots of great indie and alternative music still being made today.

I'd say Use Your Illusion I&II have probably aged the worst in my opinion. Pearl Jam "Ten", for me, may have aged the best.

Agree. Wasn’t huge fan of either GnR offering.

But, hard to argue that Ten, Black, Nevermind aren’t amongst the best albums of all time.

Also, the diversity is amazing.

Dead, empty, soulless lyrics. It’s pathetic

I thought they had a chance to be a kickass group but unfortunately Rose developed LSD and they imploded before they ever got off the launching pad, never cared for PJ or Nirvana

Use Your Illusion should have just been one album. A lot of filler on both of those albums, with some great songs on both of them.

This is the issue, and someone writing it off as "lol rap bad" is oversimplifying it. Rap was around before 1991, it just wasn't awful. Licensed to Ill came out in 86. Straight Outta Compton in 88. All kinds of rap throughout the 90s that's lyrically deep.

The difference now is that the means to produce something is so accessible that literally anyone can do it. Ghostwritten trash that they know will take off on a TikTok trend in a 10 second clip.

That being said, there's good music out there still. You just have to dig for it now.

You have to find acceptable stuff to listen to now.

There are so many options now and most of it is no bueno.

These scab kids running around in these godawful baggy nineties clothes forgot the best thing about the generation.

Modern music is absolutely trash—and that’s coming from a guy who thinks most of the best music ever created came from the Vietnam era, long before I was released from my old man’s nutsack.

long time before then, it was around in the early 70s, probably even before, it was just so dumb and there was so much great music being made back then it was paid no attention, and rightfully so

Filler songs? Maybe illusion 2 has a couple but both of these albums are cover to cover legit and getting rid of the “filler songs” turns great albums into shite.

It's crazy how when I go back to listen to the music I listened to in HS in the 2000s how awful it is. Mostly the pop stuff that came on the radio. At the time I really enjoyed a lot of it but now I go back and see how simple and formulaic it is . Everything I listen to pretty much comes before the mid 90s. Some stuff from the 21st century but not a ton.

It's definitely a musical dark age.

I'd argue against that. Technology has made media sharing so easy these days that it's a lot easier to find good stuff. Anyone who complains about lack of good stuff hasn't spent five minutes on youtube, spotify, bandcamp, etc.

Nice. I was not aware those were released so close to each other.

But either way, I'd still prefer listening to Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Journey, Steve Miller Band, Aerosmith, Skynyrd, etc....

Put on "The Strokes" radio on Spotify for some good newer rock tunes. But it's not much.

Someone here said they saw a kid wearing a Nirvana t shirt and asked them if they were a Kurt Cobain fan and the kid responded "Who?"
