Empire State Building had five construction deaths. World Trade Center had 60 construction deaths.
That's nuts, especially considering all the different pictures I see of people sitting 700 ft up on steel beams from the Empire State Building. I get queezy on a 2 story roof.

Between 5 - 14 died according to records. Probably more like 20. Finished 2 weeks earlier than expected.
Now bridges--that's where people got killed during construction. And canals.

Men got shite done back then.
And men died doing shite back then. One death today will shut a site down for a while. They had five people die building that tower.

I seem to remember that the Brooklyn Bridge had a huge number of deaths.
Edit: Maybe I'm thinking of another bridge because allegedly it was only 20

I'm sure quite few died or were seriously hurt building it.
I think 8 or 9 people died. At the time they expected to kill one person for every million dollars spent.
There are a few documentaries on building the Empire State Building. This one is 7 minutes and interesting if you’re into this kind of stuff.
NY Empire State Building.

Interesting fact I recently learned that has little relevance to this thread:
The Golden Gate bridge has never finished being painted and will never finish. It takes so long that when they complete a coat the other side has started to show wear, so they start all over again.

Building the Brooklyn Bridge was very dangerous.
the caissons were poorly ventilated, lit by gas lamps, and filled with pressurized air. At any moment, a leak in the wood, a problem with the air pumps, or a fire could cause the box to depressurize, make the water rise, or create another crisis that could kill everyone inside. To make things even more fun, Roebling used high explosives to blow up many of the boulders on the river bottom; basically, caisson workers would wait until the box hit a rock, then would drill a hole in it, pack it with explosives, and set it off.
Not surprisingly, caisson work wasn't all that popular. Despite the princely (by 1871 standards) wages of $2.25 per day, McCullough estimates that one third of the caisson workers quit every week.

These two photos both feature the same Aldabra giant tortoise named Jonathan. The photo on the left was taken in 1902 and the photo on the right was taken in 2017. Jonathan was born in 1832 and today he is 186 years old.
That is incredible! Could you imagine the stories he could tell?? Obviously, if tortoises could talk...
