I think it's like some wizard of oz thing that makes the wicked witch sympathetic.
That's it in a nutshell. From what I understand, the Wicked Witch appears in the actual books for like half-a-second. The movie expanded her a bit (to have a villain). The Wicked series of books started in 1995 (Baum's Oz series was around 1900) as a more adult-oriented version where the society of Oz was changed from being more innocent and simple (even whimsical), the Wicked series made it more political and dramatic.
The play (and thus the movie) isn't about that though, it's more about telling the same, worn-out tale of "not judging a book by its cover" as Elphaba's green skin is used as a reason the people of the world ostracize her and her eventual triumphant victory of self-realization. You can take it even a step further into generalization by viewing it as "it's the rest of the world's fault (ie: not her own) that she's considered 'evil'."

Musicals suck to begin with
Some musicals are pretty damn entertaining. I guess I have had to sit thru enough over the years with my wife who is into them.
Book of Mormon for example is fricking funny.

If your wife is obsessed with this play or movie, she’s either having an emotional affair with a dude at work or he’s already fingering her at lunch in the car you pay for because her “job” is a joke or he’s already hitting that.
Keep paying her SUV and daycare bills. Also pay for the vacation in gulf shores next year so she can post her toes in the sand pics.
This may be the most accurate thing I've ever read on TD.

Which gas station do you work at?

quote:Oh no, Hollywood won't miss an opportunity to push their narrative. They not only pick someone who doesn't "favor" hamilton, she's got obvious African features to make their point blatantly obvious.
For one thing, taking a role famously portrayed by a white person and casting a black person who is ridiculed for her green skin color is the kind of woke shite I don’t like. Cast someone who at least favors Hamilton.
There's always 8 or ten shows on the various streaming services that I refuse to watch. I tell my wife, yeah, no, the villains are all white males and the good guy is black and saves the blonde. No thanks.
Let's see how they double down on their racism (and sexism) over the next four years.

As opposed to grown men who wear jerseys and cry over football?

Hell, not just jerseys. There are more costumes and face paint at a random SEC or NFL game than at any Broadway show.

Being obsessed with theaters and musicals is a class/virtue signal

If you're over 25 and do any of this...it's also weird to me.

Directly inspired by the Princess Theatre shows in London in the 1910s
Everything is inspired by something else. The “Broadway style musical” is a discrete type of theater, and basically no one argues that point.

you mean the western
No, I mean the Hollywood style film.

and jazz are the three unique pieces of American culture
Are you sure jazz wasn’t inspired by something else that would exclude it from the list?

If by "accurate" you mean the saddest and most cynical thing you've read here you may be right.
