Did anyone say anything to him about it? It sounds like they did, given this piece. So it's not ignorance, just plain stupidity. Not saying you can't be sympathetic, but the situation is entirely the dude's fault and now he's put his family in a worse situation than if had just been responsible.

Humans used to have a 30 year life span mostly because of mouth diseases. It was insanely easy to not be able to get just a tiny bit of something out of your gap and then it gets infected and you die.

One of my flaws is empathy. I always thought I might be an a-hole for not really caring much about other people’s problems. We all have problems, they suck, deal with it.
Then I realized most people fake empathy, and I do actually care about people in situations as you described. As a father, it’s mostly when a wife, husband, or kids are affected. They didn’t do anything to deserve that.
