So I’ve been taking care of my 76 year old dad since mom passed away in March. I handle everything for him including his finances. The past few weeks he’s asked me on several occasions to stop by the bank and bring him 5 or 600 dollars in cash. He doesn’t drive or leave the house unless he’s with me, so I’m not sure why he is suddenly needing hundreds of dollars in cash. When I ask, he says he just likes having it on him.

He has an in home caregiver while I’m at work, but nothing that leads me to believe she’s asking him for money. However, I really don’t want him having that kind of money on him when I’m not around.

Definitely not being paranoid and given the circumstances your concern is well warranted.

Honestly trust your instincts. Something’s not right.

Either the caregiver is scamming him or he's stashing money because of cognitive issues.

When my ex's grandmother passed, we had to clean out her apartment.
We found $20's and $100's stashed all over and in the strangest places.

She may not be "asking."

Children of parents who lived through the depression always like to have cash on them...at least my dad did.

It’s his money but he’s never carried large amounts of cash. He does have huge heart though and has always been one to help others. As I said I have nothing that says the care giver is asking for cash but you never know with people. The last thing I want is to make my dad a target while I’m at work.

Any chance they could be having sex on a pile of money?

Next time you start the conversation.

Say something like ‘I’m running to the hardware store, Dad. Want me to stop by the bank and grab you some cash ?’ Whether his answer is Yes or No it tees you up to politely ask ‘What are you needing all this cash for lately anyway ? You got a new lady friend or hot stock or something?’ It comes across as a conversation and a joke and won’t be misconstrued as an attack. Just my advice. Ultimately, you know your dad best.

Yep.

He likely has it in his head that he needs the cash for something and keeps forgetting that he asked for it and stashed it somewhere.

When my Grandpa started declining, he buried cash in jars all over his yard.

Why make this more complicated than it needs to be and post it here? Do it once and then when he asks again explain you just gave him the money and he hasn't left the house to spend it so where did he put the last amount of money you gave him.

You plan on working his hips for him when the escort shows up?

Honestly, you would know better than us but is there any cognitive decline? He may be reverting to old habits before credit cards were widely accepted (my dad always carried around that amount in the 90s).

Personally, if 600 wouldn't make a huge difference, I'd set up some cameras, give him the money, and pop some corn. My curiosity would get the better of me if I couldn't come up with a reasonable explanation.

Give him 5 $20s and see what happens. He may just be stashing the cash somewhere. Trust your instincts, but try not to anger him.

Is his cognitive ability so far gong you can't just ask him what the money is for?
