Actually the best way to win this is at the local level via zoning.

How can average American compete with this?
a nation of renters, with 90% of farmland owned by Gates and Chyna

They've really taken off the last few years and that 30% figure is probably much higher for the big metro areas of Houston, Austin and DFW.
Wouldn't surprise me. I've had my house in Plano for about 5 years now and I would guess that least 2/3rds of the home sales in my neighborhood in that time were to these investment companies. Half of them just rent the place out and the other half do fixup work before selling them for 100K more than they bought em for.

That is some bullshite. I’m all for businesses making money but buying up homes with cash, driving up prices and keeping regular Americans out of homes is where I draw the line.

What kinda homes we talking? Like small homes in east plano or 4,000 square foot homes in west plano?

They wont because they profit, and the current trend is to protect institutional investors, not your residential buyer.

You can't
In North DFW (I'm sure it's the same all over Texas) a small 3/2 in a decent neighborhood is $450,000.00

I'd like to see property taxes rise according to number of homes
tax rate + 10% for 2nd home
+ 15% for 3rd home
+ 25% for 4th home
+ 33% for 5th home, etc..

Your only hope is zoning, and the commercial guys will outpay you. They can buy more officials than an individual

A company could be an LLC that is one dude who owns five rentals.

One of the problems with limiting this is SCOTUS has had a long problem with defining what is a person with protectable rights, to wit in Dred Scott they mistook a person was property, and in Citizens United they confused property with a person.
The other confounding issue is quite a few single-family homes are owned by LLCs etc which are sole proprietorships of the occupier of the property or duplexes etc that are occupied in part by someone where the corporation is just an alter ego.
This is one of those places HOAs can be useful. Our home is governed by an HOA that prevents renting sort or long term a house that can't be rented isn't much use for Blackrock et al.

Progressive taxation. Things are getting weird politically!

You need a place for all those voters that come in for the election.

2000-3000 sqft in central-west Plano. Mostly built in the late 70s/early 80s.
