“California has been a pioneer in pushing for rooftop solar power, building up the largest solar market in the U.S. More than 20 years and 1.3 million rooftops later, the bill is coming due.

Beginning in 2006, the state, focused on how to incentivize people to take up solar power, showered subsidies on homeowners who installed photovoltaic panels but had no comprehensive plan to dispose of them. Now, panels purchased under those programs are nearing the end of their typical 25-year life cycle.

Many are already winding up in landfills, where components that contain toxic heavy metals such as selenium and cadmium can contaminate groundwater.

“People just don’t realize that there are toxic materials in those electronics, that it’s fine if it’s just sitting in a box in your house,” said Natalie Click, a doctoral candidate in materials science at the University of Arizona who studies the issue. “But once it gets crushed and put into the landfill, a lot of those toxic chemicals and materials are going to leak into your groundwater.”

Leftists never consider the consequences of their actions. They go solely on emotion that “feels” like it’s the right thing to do. Logical thought never enters the equation.

This seems like a fairly simple solution, why are these ever ending up in landfills and not being recycled with the valuable and toxic metals harvested and recycled?

I don't disagree with the point that the OP is trying to make, but most modern landfills are lined to prevent groundwater contamination, so the quote is a bit disingenuous....

Impossible.

Liberals, lbgtq, Tesla, and alternate energy sources solve everything

Not even close to economic and the process is energy intensive including dangerous toxic gases.

Tell me you don't understand how landfills work without telling me you don't understand how landfills work.

Well, the very simple answer to your “simple solution” should likewise be quite obvious. If no one is Recycling these panels that means it’s highly likely those in the recycling industry in California have deemed it either (1) not profitable and/or (2) too unsafe to bother recycling these solar panels. Considering the draconian environmental laws on the books in California, I’d imagine any recycling facility would take one look at the toxic nature of these panels and say no thank you.

It's hilarious that these people say it's only harmful if it's in a landfill and not on your fricking roof
