And they seem to have a badass selection based on their website and photos.

I can't figure out if Total Wine really has a huge selection or they just put tons of merchandise out at the same time. I don't think they carry any more bourbon, for example, than Calandro's. It looks like a lot because they'll put 4 rows 6 bottles deep on the shelf at any given time, but it doesn't seem like there's a ton of variety.

It just seems like they could offer the same variety of bottles with a 50% smaller store and active stock boys.

Will go back but weird to have to find a quarter and bring my own bags

You get used to it. Also, items on the shelves are stocked still in their cardboard case. You can usually find a large one for cereal or chips that's almost empty and use it to tote your stuff out.

The generic beer was in yellow cans with "BEER" in big letters.

Don't recall trying it, but I suspect it was nastier than natty light.

I don't remember that beer, but I remember an uncle of mine drank K&B beer. It was what I imagined ditch water would taste like.

Unfortunately not. My German friend says it’s got more variety over there. She was happy to see them here but modestly disappointed.

I’m not excited. I’d rather Publix.

so let me get this straight.

You have to rent your cart for a quarter.
you have to bring your own bags.
You can't pay with a credit card.
You have to drive around homeless crackheads in the area.

Sounds like a solid business plan for a grocery store that will succeed at that location.

Incorrect, in my experience.

Correct, for Baton Rouge.

Good, cheap groceries for everyone

Soooooo they picked a location right next to the largest homeless encampment in Baton Rouge.

This will work out well.

That's peculiar. Is this so they eliminate EBT hassles/clientele?

I've only been to one in Ohio maybe 15 years ago. More options is never a bad thing although one has to wonder how saturated can SBR get with grocery stores.

I avoid it during the daytime because of the traffic.

And in the nighttime because of all the traffic and the homeless.

It'll be a lot easier to get to whenever they get around to extending Rieger to Pecue.

No, if you want to do that you put up a sign saying "NO EBT ACCEPTED"

Like Calandro's

They appear to have gone the same route as Ralph’s for generics.

Repo Man had a lot of fun with that by intentionally using Ralph’s generics for a lot of stuff because the director couldn’t get any product placement in the film, well besides pine tree air fresheners, in addition to being broke.

Right. Aldi private label stuff is generally good. We've had some misses but overall we really like shopping there.

The lack of different brands to choose from makes the shopping easier. You don't leave quite as mentally exhausted as you do from a regular grocery store. They either have something or they don't. We do as much of our regular shopping there as we can. We still go to a local grocery store for meat or things Aldi doesn't carry.

If you like boxed Mac & Cheese, the $.34 boxes at Aldi are probably the best generic version I've had and I'd much rather pay that than an entire $1 more for Kraft.

Loved seeing Aldi come to US. I missed German groceries.when we moved back to states. Aldi always has rotating selection of international foods and random non food items always good to browse through. Their minimalist model makes shopping quicker and a good value without having to price compare 6 versions of everything. Perhaps the best part is the coin deposit to use a cart. Never worry about a-holes leaving them in parking lot.
