Sounds like a luxury prison. Should be the bare minimum.
"Bare Minimum" WAS how things were run, until Federal judges started ruling that it was cruel. That's why we're being forced to construct $1 billion dollar whiz-bang jails. Thank the trial lawyers and the judges that enable them.

Yep, we treat career criminals far better than they deserve.
Waste too much money on bleeding hearts.

Angola holds 6300 prisoners. I wonder how much it would cost to build. Surely nowhere near $1B? I've been there as a visitor and it looked pretty basic.
It has several camps and medium security dorms besides the old main prison.
It would easily cost over two billion dollars to build all that to today’s standards.

quote:$1B to house 4,000 inmates is unfathomable. A concrete structure, 8X8 cells w/bars, cigar box window, a single light bulb, toilet/sick and a metal cot.

You could buy a big arse island in the Pacific for much cheaper and ship every person serving a life sentence there. Win-win for all parties.

A .22acp is much cheaper.

It should be a bunch of very basic dormitories
And they need space for a lot more than 4000, we need at least triple the number of prisoners we currently have. Way too many POS walking the streets

Prisons should be cheap. Poured concrete, no TVs, sledgehammer and huge rocks to break each day. 3 simple meals and a toothbrush. Do it all again tomorrow.

Couldn't MeeMaw just buy a couple of old malls and put some chicken wire over the windows and bolt the excess doors shut ?

Just regurgitated talking points. As already pointed out, this comes out to over $250k per housed inmate. I defy anyone to come up with a list of amenities that could scratch $10k per inmate. Big screen TVs, cell phones, computer, whatever. Give it a shot. Now try $200k (reserving a still absurd $50k per inmate for the actual structure, medical, etc).
This is straight fricking self dealing grift.

At least someone is building prisons? That seems to be a win as DA's across the country aren't doing their jobs?

if it was La we would have zero prisons and reallocated the 1.25 to something else. Count your blessings
Definitely would go to public sector worker union pensions

Some people living on the streets can commit a felony just to live in that new place, cold A/C, 3 hot meals a day,
WTF
WTF

LOL if anyone thinks that this is the final price or that this prison will meet expectations. I bet they determine that it cannot safely house 4k prisoners when all is said and done.
This new bidding process basically gave the winner of the design (10% of the project) free reign to charge what they pleased over the remaining 90%.
Everyone knows that regular government bidding is inefficient, but whole hell some of the ideas to replace it are God awful. I think that we have to accept that regular bidding is innefient but is done for a reason.

It'll still be over-budget.
