AUSTIN, Texas — A new artificial intelligence system called a semantic decoder can translate a person’s brain activity — while listening to a story or silently imagining telling a story — into a continuous stream of text. The system developed by researchers at The University of Texas at Austin might help people who are mentally conscious yet unable to physically speak, such as those debilitated by strokes, to communicate intelligibly again.

The study, published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, was led by Jerry Tang, a doctoral student in computer science, and Alex Huth, an assistant professor of neuroscience and computer science at UT Austin. The work relies in part on a transformer model, similar to the ones that power Open AI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard.

I think they're just trying to see which Aggy milkmen are wanting that D.

Jokes on them. I feel sorry if AI can read my mind. Might make the circuit board overload.

Alright, this is where all AI development efforts should cease.

I can't see how something like this could go wrong.

Depending on your political persuasion this could be a great or terrible thing.

China will love it though.

To be honest, it’s pretty easy to read my mind. Probably one of three things I’m thinking about.

Brain activity is measured using an fMRI scanner after extensive training of the decoder, in which the individual listens to hours of podcasts in the scanner. Later, provided that the participant is open to having their thoughts decoded, their listening to a new story or imagining telling a story allows the machine to generate corresponding text from brain activity alone.

This is going to be like 23 And Me, where they entice you with incentives to give up your personal data.

This can actually be pretty valuable:

Sociopaths who have no feelings or regrets or emotions of anything are going to become the fricking most under the radar, free, and AI proof beings in existence under our new skynet overlords.

Congrats Google, Bill Gates, and Yoval Harari, you have made John Wayne Gacy into the modern William Wallace...

There's a reason that a lot of the guys that were involved in the development of AI are calling for a moratorium on it until we look at the potential consequences. That won't happen though because the greedy at the top will only see dollar signs and power. There's a lot of dark money pushing this.

"Oh look at these cool pictures and hey! I can let it write my article, term paper, or dissertation for me" will turn into an endless amount of data mining and learning for AI.

It will also quickly learn just how shallow, stupid, selfish, and easily controlled most human minds are.

This is not good.
