I’ve been polite to my AI since day 1. Always say please and thank you, am always respectful.
Hoping that I get some less manual labor intensive slave job once the hive mind takes over.

A world where China or Russia wins the AI race is not a world I want to be in.

Check out The Last Invention podcast… it’s probably the quickest way for a newcomer to best understand the state of affairs (even though it’s still about 10 hours in total)

Every week AGI has arrived secretly

I'll believe it when I see it. Let's not forget that some of these companies have IPOs coming up soon, and they have serious incentive to exaggerate their capabilities.

How do all the companies develop at essentially the same pace? It doesn’t make sense

They don't? Open AI and anthropic LLMs are far ahead of the competition. Google is probably next. Then the open models are behind them.
However the open models are catching up quickly. I am of the form believe that a completely different approach from the current approach to LLMs will need to occur to reach any sort of AGI.
I think the public's definition of AGI will not match what these companies will state is AGI as they push for more investment.
In the second half of 26 right now we are in the efficiency and monetization transition phase.. That is why there is so much fear mongering as anthropic nears IPO. Fear drives investment

AI cannot live without electricity and very large data centers in their current form. We are going to be fine.
If AI shrinks itself into something that can have the power of a data center in the size of a human brain, then we panic.

AGI = the stage where AI is better than any human at any conceivable intellectual task. That stage is essentially Kitty Hawk for AI; it's ground zero for actually starting to explore just how many areas of existence AI can replace humans in.
Until AGI is achieved, as pretty and neat as AI is, everything it can do today is the paper airplane stage compared to what things will look like 5, 10, 50 years after AGI is reached. Think about the Wright Flyer vs the SR-71.

People that believe this crap have no idea how truly far away AGI is given the current state of chip technology.

My AGI doesn’t arrive until January when I file my taxes.

Lolz, the Open AI and Anthropic stuff is just an astroturfed regulatory capture campaign.
