Certainly this isn't something that is unique to the restaurant industry. And sometimes, there can be legit reasons - the bank or landlord locks the doors, the government shuts them down for failure to pay taxes, etc.

But I think sometimes, it's because the management/owners are not very good, and don't want to have to face the employees in person. They also may be afraid that the employees might steal or harm something on the way out, which is often an unfounded fear - provided you have decent employees.

I think the difference is in the three "right ways" he mentions - Crazy Johnny's, Balize, and Mazado - they were different. Baize and Mazado had other places to put the staff. And Crazy Johnny's had been open forever and it was just time.

It's absolutely a crappy situation for everyone, though, to just show up and find out your employer has closed.

Yeah the shock of finding out you have to find a new place to buy weed out back.

Sonny Bono owned a restaurant after leaving show biz, and said his biggest problems were govt red tape (the reason he went into politics, but that's another story) and employee theft

A lot of restaurant owners are dumbasses that worked at a restaurant that thought they could do it better with no ownership experience. I'm not surprised at all they don't close their business in an orderly fashion.

Ian is my baw. He stands up for integrity and all things delicious. I'm envious of his job.

His rugby game could use a little work.

A lot of restaurant owners are shitty people, and even shittier business owners. That said, many people who work in restaurants are bottom feeders, and are notorious for doing just what you say they wouldn't.

Tiger Deauxnuts kind of did this. I was sad.

When I was a teen, the restaurant I worked at shut down with zero notice. Went in to get my schedule and there was a sign on the door.

In terms of customers, I can understand regulars being upset, but it's not that big of a deal.

As far as closing like that on employees, it's a shite move

If I were working as a print journalist, I’d be saving money by eating at home.

But how does one get ownership experience without being a restaurant owner?

The New Orleans Advocate already did something on that.

I’m trying to pimp myself here

"Goes off"? It was a well written and fair piece, but okay.
