Supposedly that's what On The Border did as well. Employees came in for a shift and were told it was the last day in business.

The writer was complaining about Sucre`
Wasn't that the place whose owner/chef was found diddling employees?

At least they are actually admitting they are closing these days.
Back during the oil crunch of the late 80s, there were tons of places “closed for remodeling” that remodeled themselves into entirely new restaurants. About 3-5 years later.

But I think sometimes, it's because the management/owners are not very good, and don't want to have to face the employees in person. They also may be afraid that the employees might steal or harm something on the way out
or how about these real and very valid reasons not to announce anything in advance
employees will steal everything that isnt nailed or bolted down thinking they "earned it" as a reward for working there
employees may not come to work that last week fearing not getting paid or trouble getting paid. plus tips will suck knowing the place is closing so no need to tip if your never coming back.
vendors and suppliers will not deliver or restock you with supplies unless full balance is paid including COD of last orders
people just dont go to restaurants about to close because they expect, and often do get poor quality food and service
it just makes things better for everyone involved and run smoother to wait until the end of the last day and then close. it sucks for employees out of work with no notice but thats how it works no matter what if you get fired and most "decent" employers throw in an extra weeks pay as compensation for good employees
