Every area is sketch. It's not segregated like other cities.
The worst areas are the tourist areas as well.
Even if you live out in Lakeview or in Jefferson Parrish, you won't escape crime.

quote:Forget the haters. New Orleans is one of the best cites to visit in the entire country. Especially when the weather is good, which is many months in the the fall and springtime. Food, Fun and Fantastic People !!
The French Quarter is one of the best preserved 18th-19th century urban areas in the western hemisphere. Lots of history just for the looking if that's your thing. There are great museums that could ensnare you for days in the Quarter: 1850 House, Herman Grima House, Pharmacy Museum, Cabildo, Presbetyre (Mardi Gras,) U.S. Mint history and jazz, Historic New Orleans Collection.
THEN you get out of the Quarter, and there's the World War II museum which really takes two days. The Italian-American Museum, the NOMA in City Park with the sculpture garden, and more that I do not know much about. And that's just museums, not to mention the "museum" that is the Quarter and parts of the Central Business District and all the neighborhoods radiating out from the Quarter or the river in both directions.

Yet, 13 million or so people a year feel the need to come visit the city.

Mandina's on Canal street away from downtown if you want to get some great non-tourist food; it's where the locals eat.
You can thank me later. Tell them CajunSuperJeff from Seattle sent you.

Meh. More likely to have a building fall on you. Consider a hard hat.

Easy, tell ‘me to stay north of Lake Ponchartrain and they’ll be fine.

Look there are a lot of world class restaurants in New Orleans and locals all have their favorites but for a first time visitor tell them to go to Commander's Palace. When they call for the reservation explain the situation and I suspect they will be very happy they went there.

Maybe the worst place to be is the Quarter. Garden District or uptown is relatively safe.

Avoid seeking advice from residents of our suburbs and lesser in-state cities, which is all of them. They're generally unhappy, and asking about things to do in New Orleans serves merely as an opportunity to engage in the most basic of human psychological tendencies: to deflect out of jealousy. Truth hurts!

The dire warnings of impending violence are exaggerated. You need to be aware of your surroundings and don’t walk alone down a street at night.
And wake up early enough for brunch at Ruby Slipper one morning. There’s one in The Marigny and on Magazine. TheCanal St location is closed due to the collapsed hotel. But it’s great to start the morning with a Bloody Mary or Mimosa and Eggs Benedict with local color.

Yeah frick the quarter in general, but with multiple streets closed because of the HR, traffic is a nightmare. Go Uptown and stay there.

Don’t walk down any streets where you don’t see others walking.
