Yeah. OP will get MUCH better replies on the Travel Board and the Food and Drink board than on here.

I was being generous. With the abundance of better restaurants, I wouldn't go unless you want to drink a cocktail on the 2nd floor balcony and people watch.

If you're going to be spending time in the FQ, you definitely have to do a little homework.

There are good restaurants there, but for every 1 good one there are 3 shitty tourist traps.

Agreed. I created a spreadsheet of different restaurants and bars (200 and counting) I want to go to during my 2 years in Nola.....I still have a LONG way to go and less than a year to do it.

Just want a heads up to send her way about sketchy areas she should avoid while there. I think most of their time will be in the French Quarter area.

Its tricky. A highway can separate danger from more danger.

Times of day matter. Upper Decatur..royal st..seem fun for older ladies

The French Quarter is one of the best preserved 18th-19th century urban areas in the western hemisphere. Lots of history just for the looking if that's your thing. There are great museums that could ensnare you for days in the Quarter: 1850 House, Herman Grima House, Pharmacy Museum, Cabildo, Presbetyre (Mardi Gras,) U.S. Mint history and jazz, Historic New Orleans Collection.

THEN you get out of the Quarter, and there's the World War II museum which really takes two days. The Italian-American Museum, the NOMA in City Park with the sculpture garden, and more that I do not know much about. And that's just museums, not to mention the "museum" that is the Quarter and parts of the Central Business District and all the neighborhoods radiating out from the Quarter or the river in both directions.

Stay on the river side of St. Charles, but be leery about going beyond Magazine St. Nothing is really safe in the French Quarter.

Sounds like they won't really be out late so they'll be fine.

I don't agree, it is probably the best bang for your buck if you are not familiar with New Orleans.

FQ is okay but Bourbon is over rated unless you are 18 - 21 and going to party and get drunk.

Decatur and Royal are more interesting. Ditto a previous post about street car ride(Green not Red Cars) and touring the garden district area. Magazine street uptown is nice to stroll around on Saturdays and has a lot of good restaurants. As others have said WWII museum is awesome and a trip to city park and drive down Bayou St. John is nice too.
