You've received some good info in this thread.

Get him a big crate if you are worried about the dog being cramped.

Used something like this for my shepherd for a while until he adapted to me and the house(found him on the street). Now I leave him out and the dude just sleeps on the couch or bed all day, no problems.

The dog wasn't barking because of water, it was barking because it was outside with a bunch of stimuli.

I was going to say that you can kennel the dog in your house for 8 hours, but then I read it's an Australian Sheppard. You chose the wrong breed.

Get a basset hound.

Why not keep him in a pen inside instead of a kennel?

Then he'll be fine.

I'd do this, then maybe start with short trips away before leaving him alone in the house for 8+ hours a day, unless you really have a feel for the dog and he/she seems fine.

Dog is barking because it's either scared (new environment) or bored (it's an Aussie - like a border collie, it needs a job). I have a border collie that stays indoors while we're at work. He was crate trained, but no longer uses a crate. Dude will chill all day until you get home, but then he needs a crap ton of exercise.

I made sure to take him for a run this morning and then left him inside (crate needs to be assembled, so he’s out of the crate).

UPDATE:
Dog was well-behaved inside during day.

My dog stays inside. He is crate trained and housebroken. He usually sleeps in his crate during the day even though the door to crate is wide open.

The metal ones are pull and pop, takes about 1 min to go from stow mode to use mode.

Make sure it takes dumps in it's own yard.

Agree with the above, crate and water inside, he’ll be fine for 9 hrs or so, he’ll sleep most of it anyway.

Option 3, hands down.

Dogs that are properly kennel trained will come to look at their kennel as their safe space. No matter what the animal rights activist tell you, it is NOT I humane.

I have a 2 year old Aussie and a brand new 3 month old. They both CHOOSE to sleep their kennels even though we let them sleep on the bed, because they feel most comfortable there. Whenever they do something bad, they run to the kennel, again - because it’s their safe space (and we have never used the kennel as punishment). They also won’t go to the bathroom in their kennels because they don’t want to mess up their “house.”

I know it’s hard to put a dog in a kennel and hear them whine but after a couple days they’ll stop and learn to love it, just make sure the kennel is big enough and never use it as punishment or time out. It’s also better for them to be inside, in a kennel, instead of outside in the heat and cold.

Kennel trained dogs are also much easier to travel with and do better in car rides, etc. Don’t let your bleeding heart stop you from doing what’s right.

Get over yourself man. Nothing in his post even hinted at him not taking care of the dog. Being toxic just to be toxic.

I disagree with every word you said, and I’m no human rights activist in any form or fashion.

No dog would choose to sit in a kennel over a couch. You’ve made him chose that b/c dogs enjoy doing what their masters tell them to do and you have made him think that you like the fact that he goes to his kennel.

Dogs don’t just sleep all day, unless you have a fat and or lazy dog. We have a doggy door. My boy would go outside all the time during the day to entertain himself. He’d go out to chase butterflies and dragon flies b/c he’s full of energy all day, not just the 4 hours we are home with him. He’d sit inside staring outside through the window waiting for a squirrel or bird to come in the yard so he could bust through the doggy door and chase it.
Our fat lazy girl enjoyed sitting on the couch all day.

No dog wants to sit in a kennel. It’s a learned behavior from their owner.

How old is he?
Are you giving him a good vigorous walk around the neighborhood before you leave for work? Mental stimulation does just as much or more for tiring a dog than purely physical. You have to give him new shite to smell. Puzzle toys and snuffle mats are a plus too.
What about installing a dog door so that he can come and go? Also, you might want to consider using rover to have someone see him during the day to make sure that you don’t end up fostering separation anxiety on him. He’s in a brand new environment and you’re the only thing he knows to trust so far and then you just left him for 8 hours which probably feels like an eternity to him. You need to start with shorter trips away from him.

The dog is about one and a half years old.

This week, I’m going to plan on coming home during lunch to let him out to potty and play with him. He definitely enjoyed it today, and I enjoyed eating on the back patio with the nice weather.

Long term, I may use rover, since one of my friends is a walker with them.

Plenty of water
Bark collar

Oh before you say cruel return the dog you might as well put a bullet in it. A returned adult dog will not get re homed it gets the needle so collar or death.

You leave a note on your door trespassers will be prosecuted get a security camera.

Eh, I’m kinda already the trashy baw on the block with live bands practicing here at night, lots of friends’ cars street parking, and my buddies drinking and smoking cigs on the back patio. I’d rather try not to push my luck any more than I already do. I really don’t want to move again.
