but I don’t know if I like the idea of him getting zero exercise all day when he should have this huge yard to roam and play in.

I guarantee if you put a webcam on hm he will lay on your porch by the door sleeping 90% of the time he’s outside alone, and the other 10% barking at noises along the fence. He will be fine in a kennel or bathroom with exercise before and after work until house trained

Don’t feel bad. Dogs feel secure in a kennel. If there’s any way you can come home at lunch to let it out, that would be good. But it’ll be fine if you can’t (assuming it isn’t a puppy).

Yep. I had a large lab who would go sleep in his kennel all the time. We had stopped kenneling him years earlier and he would still go upstairs and sleep in his kennel.

That’s how mine were, too. They’d go in their crates to nap with the door open long after we stopped kenneling them.

I'm a dog person. We have rescues and we foster when we can. Guns, dogs, and Ohio State football are about the only things I'll ever be serious about.

Best dogs I’ve ever known have been crate trained.

After a while you can switch out the crate for a dog bed in a room like a laundry room or bathroom if you want with the same routine.

In the long run even if you leave the door open the dog will spend the day there.

Now even when I travel my dog will go wherever I put his bed.

It’s fool proof and it works. Don’t have to worry or recreate the wheel here.

Don’t have pets on a leased property. Simple as that.

From reading this thread, someone who thinks that pets in doors is disgusting shouldn't get a dog, correct? I would love a big dog for the yard and to take to the park, but I'm too much of a neat freak for indoor animals.

He hasn’t gotten comfortable in his new home yet and also is probably bored. Exercise him a lot in the morning. Try a dog walker after lunch. I don’t believe any dog should be crated for 8 or so hours a day.

4. Get a cat who can eat both the neighbor and the neighbors barking dog.

When I got home, there was a handwritten note on my front door complaining about the dog’s incessant barking

Easily solved getting a RING on your front door to see who wrote the note

quote:

When I got in the backyard, I saw what I think may be why: his water bowl was completely empty. He must have drank it all and was barking for someone to bring him more. When I brought him inside, he drank a ton, and was clearly very thirsty.

Get one of these for the outside, after a month or so you should have a feel how many days till you fill it again.

quote:

When I’ve been home, the dog rarely, if ever barks, but one neighbor’s dog barks at it constantly if they are both outside at the same tome.

Fair enough, make sure it is your dog drawing the neighbors ire and not the other dog.

quote:

Note: This is a good-sized high energy dog (Aussie) that needs exercise.

I have coon hounds that need to run 2-3 hours a day, every day. I laugh at your thought you have a high energy dog.

quote:

But, in my lease, complaints against me to the neighborhood association could get my lease voided.

Neighborhood associations are for people who are pains in the arse. I own my house in the da hood to avoid leases and neighborhood associations.

How many of you advocating to kennel a dog for 8 hours think it’s ok for us not to trot Mike the tiger around the field before games?
Kenneling a dog is cruel if you ask me. Literally sticking him in a tiny prison cell. What’s the point of having a dog if your going to put him in jail for that long every day?

Leave the damn dog outside. If the barking persists at a level that is unacceptable, then buy one of the many things you can get to stop dogs from barking outside. Dogs bark, tell your neighbor to calm the frick down, and I’m the type of neighbor that would bitch about a dog barking constantly. It’s been one frickin day. Maybe after a few days the dog will chill and not bark as much, or he continues to bark and you either put him inside or get something to stop the barking.

Get a doggie-door and train it.

They have this invention called a doggy door, have you considered it?

I suggest you avoid the single flap ones that go in a door and spend the money on a double flap that goes through a wall. Also suggest you don't put the hole in your bedroom wall to the fenced back yard or you will hear the entry and exit about 100 times a night.

Unless you have a licker and they think this is great fun for hours of licking and you get a water bill that blows your mind.

Then buy a door to replace the one with the property and store the original in the garage till you move and put a doggy door in the one you buy.

Win - Win and solves the issue with it being a lease.

3. Kennel (you write “force” like you don't think its a good option)
It is the only real option IMO. Crate train your dog.
