Are there any posters that have adult ADHD. Looking for help for a young adult that is having a hard time concentrating on their studies. Any advice would be appreciated. In the B R area

Yes. It’s a little tougher and costly these days to find doctors who prescribe ADHD meds. I went to a general doctor in BR (Dr. Matt Chamberlain), but now he does very pricy concierge. Good luck.

Realistic Answer:
I was “diagnosed” at 24. I say diagnosed in quotations because the tests are a joke. Got prescribed Adderall IR and have been taking it twice a day since.

Probabaly one of my biggest regrets in life was starting to take Adderall. Initially, it helped tremendously. Now though, I feel like it’s become a crutch. I don’t abuse it and take as prescribed, but I feel like shite when I don’t take it. Interests I have become uninteresting and I feel like an unmotivated blob who’s brain is full of mush. I started tapering down a few months ago after taking it basically daily for 4 years.

That’s all I got for you. I’d recommend finding other ways to cope like to do lists, etc before medication.

Schedule an appt with a psychiatrist first

Read into the DSM-5 criteria for ADHD. Mention that it effects you in 2 or more settings.

You’ll probably start low or w time release but can ask to try something different at your follow up

Coffee....True ADHD will be calmed by Stimuli. I have been drinking coffee since I was 8yrs old to calm me down. At night, a cup of coffee after dinner helps me relax and I sleep very well.

I've dealt with this. I tried to fix it by drinking, that didn't work.

I helped myself through various behavioral tactics. It's a lot of work, but you can change your outcomes.

I wish I could be diagnosed with a mythical disorder and use it as an excuse for the rest of my life.

We adopted a 11 year old boy in December and a lot of general practitioners won't prescribe ADHD meds anymore. You have to go to a psychiatrist to get the Rx written. He's on a low dose extended release that helps him focus. When he's off his meds, he's hyper but that's a kid for you. However he needs the help to focus in school. Eventually I'm gonna try to get him off the stuff. I don't like that stuff at all. But right now since we just got him, we are still learning each other and we have to learn when it's a focus problem or a mis-behaving problem.

To do lists, calendars, phone reminders, as well as keeping things organized go a long way to minimizing symptoms if you don't like medication. Exercising regularly helps as well.

I have ADHD pretty bad, in my experience adderall or similar drugs the only thing that really works, I can barely do a damn thing if I'm not on it. I was diagnosed in middle school but it has always felt the same for me.

honestly adderall in moderation could help the majority of people be more productive at work, but addiction to it can be pretty detrimental

If you take adderall and get calm and tired, the disorder is anything but mythical. Go ahead and keep doing you though.

A whole heck of a lot of health problems can cause the symptoms of ADD and ADHD. I recommend first, you get a thorough work up by a good doctor to be sure there is not something else that is causing their symptoms.
