TikTok mathematician video
Or YouTube link
Obviously wasn't as simple as the media coverage made it seem. I know some people in the original thread were wondering how they did it. They ended up using some infinite series along with trigonometric identities.
Really impressive stuff. And there's your positive OT news for the day

Sure. I’m suppose to believe 2 teenagers out thought the greatest mathematicians in world. Guys with 180 IQ’s. This isn’t Good Will Hunting.

The media didn’t make it out to be simple. They either just accepted it or didn’t include any of the work or proof.
The Pythagorean theorem has been proven many times using non-trig methods. Using trig to prove it has always been considered using trig to prove itself. They presented at conference to proving it using Trig but somehow without the inherent circular issues of basically using trig to prove itself correct.
“Trigonometric identities are equalities that involve trigonometric functions and are true for every value of the occurring variables for which both sides of the equality are defined.”
One of the trigonometric identities is the Pythagorean identity - “an identity expressing the Pythagorean theorem in terms of trigonometric functions, but it has others including sine and cosine for triangle identities.
Just avoiding Pythagorean theorem’s trig identity while using other trig and needing to use calculus push this outside of being a pure trig “proof”.
Great stuff but not disproving over 2000 years of math.

Doesn't a tape measure already prove it?

If anyone is interested they go to St. Mary's Academy....not Jesuit.

I have two separate smartass comments that I will put in one comment:
Believing the general media is capable of understanding and explaining complex mathematics is foolish.
And....
I don't particularly give a shite what someone identifies as.

I'm gonna be honest, I watched the entirety of that video, and I don't have the slightest clue of what that guy was talking about.
But congrats to those girls.

I've always had faith in Pythagoras, I don't need proof

Yes I know Fleetwood Mac did the original version. Yes, the one with Peter Green, the only one that matters. frick you anyway for thinking you could correct me.
