Most overrated Christmas movie by far. Other than nostalgia by people who grew up in that era, the movie isn’t very good

It appeared as a short story in Playboy a few years before it was a movie.

I thought that the movie was an amalgamation of several of Shepherd's short stories, drawn from two separate books/short story collections.

Fun fact: The author, Jean Shepherd, was a Chicago radio personality and humorist. Somebody has created a youtube channel with his old shows on it

Fun fact 2: Jean Sheppard is also the voice on Disneys Carousel of Progress

Well, despite you being a fancy lawyer who's well acquainted with overrated things, you're wrong on this one.

ACS is brilliant. It's clever, it's memorable, and it's part of Christmas.

I vaguely remember seeing a preview for it when we saw another movie. It looked interesting but unremarkable as I recall.

I try to imagine what people in 1983 thought. “Messy Marvin from the Hershey Syrup commercials is in a new family Christmas movie about BB guns. Also it takes place in the 1930s and is directed by the guy who directed Porkys!”

Probably a tough sell.

Yes, I also saw E.T. and Return of the Jedi in the theater. I was in elementary school during that time period. Santa kicking the boy down the chute on the big screen creeped me out a little. I thought the Red Ryder bb gun thing was funny, because that's what my brother got for Christmas that year (he got it a little early so he could shoot it at the camp before Christmas Day).

I just don’t understand this take.

I can maybe see someone saying that it was “good for its time, but not great today”. I’d disagree but at least I’d get where you’re coming from.

The movie was and still is a cultural phenomenon. Literally everyone remembers at least a line from it. It’s funny and relatable even today. How does that not make it good?

I don't think i saw it in the theater as a kid. I would have been 9.

I think we watched it in class at some point. Not 100%, but seems like we did.

Jean Shepherd, the author and narrator of A Christmas Story, was one of the greatest writers of our time. He had a column in Playboy that I never missed (although it was only the 2nd main reason I read Playboy). I risked my professional future one Sunday morning when I abandoned my post at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital to run 2 blocks down to Wanamaker's department store and get Shepherd to autograph his new book. Find and read his stuff; it's great fun.

It’s nostalgic only because of the 24 marathons on Christmas Day on TBS we grew up watching

Wrong. That’s only a fairly recent phenomenon. When it first became popular, it wasn’t aired constantly so us 80’s kids had to catch it on one of the few occasions it was on TV. I can remember talking about it with friends in 10th grade biology class when it was new and we all thought it was awesome.

TBS has ruined it and made people sick of it by constantly airing it. It’s a microcosm of life as a kid in the 80’s and growing up recently where you have everything on demand. It makes things less special and rare.

I barely knew the movie existed until early in the 00s (in my 20s) and I’m not sure why. Family Christmas was very religion based so that’s one thing. Also it wasn’t on the main handfuls of channels back then. I think my wife introduced me to it when we were dating. It has definitely grown on me.
