My toddler's "preschool" has the word "Academy" in the title. There is a series of biometrics and mantraps to get in and out. Video cams all over the place you can even log into to watch your child. They do play alot, but they learn a shite ton. They are learning foreign languages and sign language for frick's sake. The are already intoducing adding and subtracting at the age of three.

Rewind (ha) to the 80's....

My daycare was an actual business, not just a local lady, so I had that going for me. But we didn't learn shite. Don't eat the crayons. If you disobey an adult, you get your arse whipped in front of everyone, it was rare for kids to get in trouble because fear works. Time Out wasnt invented yet. Everyone smoked. Right there in the room where there's children. If you had asthma, frick you, good luck in life kid. The playground was unfit for even terrorist training. Got eaten alve by fireants? Watch out for fireants kid. Got stung by a bee? Stop bothering the bees kid. And if you don't stop crying about it, you are going to get your arse whipped. If you get off your cot during nap time, arse whipped.

What does genX of the OT have to add?

Last year I paid more for daycare than I do now to send my little one to St George preschool.

Let that sink in. Daycare costs are ridiculous.

I had one lady get tobacco from her cigarettes, wet it, then slapped on my wasp sting.

I see you were at one of those high-brow daycares. We had a towel on the floor for nap time.

When one of us fought another, Big Momma Betsy would gather the rest of the kids around and go to the gymnasium and she would make the 2 of us go at it.

Born in 1977. Can confirm dangerous preschool. Made us tougher adults. My favorite was the metal slide at boiling lava hot 1200 degrees in the summer and the daily 3rd degree burns.

It was a ladies house, we played NES and hide and seek and tag. I remember being terrified of the Alice in Wonderland movie, I Remember the older kids playing some board game with wooden ships and dragons that I wish I knew the name of.

There were BB gun wars. A kid got shot and made me promise not to tell.

A girl brought me into a wooded area and showed me her hoohah and wanted me to lick it.

Man I haven’t thought about this in years

I never went to daycare.

I was in three and four year old preschool that sounds more like your "today" version (this like '77-78), sans the security. i was reading by kindergarten.

no sign language though, then or now (my wife teaches deaf kids with cochlear implants and is generally anti-sign where it isn't necessary, so i just obey).

We are old by parents-of-infant standards, and we're raising our kid (3 months now, with another "planned") in the mountains/woods and on the road. we pretty much have one foot outside of normal society already, and I can't imagine dealing with young parents. I'm sure he'll be a perfectly adjusted kid, but I'm not sure that's a priority given societal trends right now.

I remember going to play on the Burger King playground on Jefferson and Lobdell one night in my early 20's (evil metal slide). The next day, they removed it.

I'm a GenX'er but never went to daycare. It was almost unheard of where I grew up. We ran the neighborhood during the summer and after school.

I had to eat red hotdogs on sliced bread with mayo or boiled ham sandwiches and leftover macaroni and cheese.

I eat literally none of those things ever again after daycare.
