It’s surreal to see things that have withstood the elements since before Christ being taken out.

Agreed
Reportedly a fairly new housing unit just partially collapsed as people flee

Anyone have any insight earthquake prediction technology and how useful or unuseful that is?

Maybe someone else may know of something but I do not. There is a video supposedly before the earthquake hit of birds that were acting erratic in the middle of the night.

BREAKING: More than 3,400 people have died from the devastating earthquake in Turkey near the border with Syria. Rescue efforts were still underway across both countries through the night and into Tuesday.

The amount of videos of buildings just collapsing is insane.
This is going to be a massive humanitarian crisis

There's some study into the response animals may have to impending natural disasters and weather events. The book I mentioned a while back about the 4/27/2011 outbreak and, specifically the Hackleburg/Phil Campbell EF5 goes into it a bit. The author solicits readers who have pets and animals that have "sensed" coming natural disasters to contact him.
Personally, I think to varying degrees animals know what is coming, some maybe well in advance.

One has to hope that people were out of the buildings that collapsed well after the quake. That's really one of the only positives right now.
I'm with Bobby, I don't think I'd be going anywhere near a building right now. What sucks, though, is the weather is shite there now. It is snowing and is forecast to only get colder, dipping below freezing soon. There's no shelter from the elements for most people who survived but lost their homes.

Not just the dead, but the amount of homeless

im not sure what kind of weather they get in that area, but with the buildings structural integrity compromised I would be worried about strong winds as well. The government might have to consider a complete demo of all buildings.

Got a link, baw? I missed it.

These areas have fairly mild winters but this earthquake happened to occur in one of the bigger cold fronts of the past decade.
So you now likely have people used to mild winters stuck in freezing temperatures, who have just lost their homes.

You can find it on Amazon. He's from North AL and put a lot into the book. It has a good balance of stories/education and a bunch of radar images and damage photos. It came out late last year. I recommend it. It has stuff from basic meteorology to more advanced material.

I saw a tweet earlier, but haven't seen it reported officially, that over 5,600 buildings have already been deemed destroyed. It didn't note whether that's just in Turkey, or also includes Syria.

Reuters is reporting the death toll is over 3,700 now.

It is a really horrible situation all around, and I also really hurt for the people in Northern Syria because even though the Russian forces are helping some, there is simply no way any Western aid organizations are going to be willing to put much resources into both on the ground help or sending money to a really corrupt regime, knowing they will pocket probably 99% of it. AT least in Turkey, you get the aid organizations and some NATO help as well as money (Erdogan's regime will likely be happy to just take 60% of it).

Your sentiment has merit. However, NONE of the countries over there can hold a candle to the band of thieves running our country.
That statement isn't meant towards either side of the aisle either.

I've been thinking about just....where do you start? As a government, as a leader, where do you even begin with a recovery/rebuild with something like that? Search/Rescue/Recovery first, but then what? A damn near impossible task.

To some extent true, there is plenty of corruption and skimming in American disasters as well, but there is so much more transparency and ability to follow the money if people want to in order to try to bring charges than there would ever be in either Syria or Turkey. It is just a different game on those places.
