I've been thinking about just....where do you start? As a government, as a leader, where do you even begin with a recovery/rebuild with something like that? Search/Rescue/Recovery first, but then what? A damn near impossible task.

Yep, it will fall to the people themselves, and hope the governments can at least provide adequate food and water resources coming in.

I feel overwhelmed just looking at some of the pictures, I can't imagine how anyone on the ground there feels right now.

But I also thought the same after similar disasters like Katrina, and although the 9th Ward specifically still hasn't recovered fully the city of New Orleans shows no signs of the devastation. Same with these beach towns that get rocked by hurricanes one year, then are seemingly rebuilt even better a couple years later.

It's definitely overwhelming at first and will take years upon years to clear the rubble, but new economies and jobs and societies pop up where this devastation seems to occur and life goes on. In the grand scheme of things, 3-5 years isn't much at all; especially when you're looking at areas that have been inhabited for thousands of years.

The death toll is now over 5,200. New estimates are that it could reach 20,000. That would be more than the 17,000 killed in the 1999 Istanbul quake.

Man, that is so sad. Katrina killed 1,800 people. It's hard to wrap your mind around just how bad this is.

It sucks you can't get any US news stations to cover it. I tried to watch something on it last night and they mentioned the death toll and then immediately moved on to politics. Switch to the PBS world news and they had some nice coverage on it.

Sky News has covered it in depth. They have a 24/7 livestream on YouTube.

This earthquake's death toll has surpassed both the Istanbul earthquake in 1999 and the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami.

Just read how they are suspending searches.

Sounds like the death toll is getting to 50k

Just awful

Two days ago they pulled a twelve-year-old boy out alive after nearly 11 days. There have been some remarkable stories of survival throughout this. At some point, those stories become fewer and fewer, and eventually stop. I imagine that is what has fueled those doing search and rescue. I admire them. That is a hell of a job that I can't begin to grasp the psychological and emotional magnitude of.
