I didn't know this. How did he get out? I guess I can go google it, but yeah you described it well. "quirky, weird/dark story".

Apparently, he was sexually abused for years by an uncle and a psychologist thought he snapped while having a dissociative episode due to the lady's cruel treatment and his past trauma. It was a weird release for sure, but eventually, they went back to court and he got a 99-year sentence.

I think that if Higgins has documented proof of a pattern of Big Lee tormenting him in the past, and the known history of Big Lee's other transgressions, and if Higgins has the money to hire a top gun criminal defense attorney, a jury might find not guilty.

The verbiage in the manslaughter law makes it seem like the DA is trying make Higgins plead down from 2nd degree murder. I don't see this going to trial, and I don't see the old man getting out any time soon.

The only thing that might be stopping that from happening is that the old man was a known hot head, and that he was known to point his pistol at people he didn't like. Hell, he might've even started the whole episode that morning. Don't know until the video comes out.

After reading interviews of people that knew both well, it seems that Big Lee was an instigator, and the old man was waiting for a reason to shoot him

Didn't the news report directly state that cameras at big Lee's house showed big Lee started the whole incident by spraying water on the old man's truck?

They are going to have to trial this case in another parish. No way he wouldnt get off with a JP juror pool. I haven't seen people this happen over a death since Bin Laden.

Yeah, the Sheriff said Lee sprayed his truck first, but they could've had words before that. No audio.

IIRC, some neighbor caught the whole thing on video also

Yeah with the right attorney Higgins may do very little time considering the circumstances. His attorney won't have much trouble painting Lee as a menace to society. This will be interesting to see how it plays out.

That is interesting, I just read up on it. He was released in 2014, it was stated that they think the movie could have had an impact on him being released because people were more sympathetic towards him. Then in 2016 he went back to trial. They actually argued that parts of the movie wasn't completely accurate. In the movie it implies she wasn't on good terms with her family, but she actually was.

Anyway, the jury that sent him back to jail was made up of 10 women and 2 men. I thought that was interesting.

Shooter had fight with neighbor on the other side of him in 2014. He's not the helpless old man. Seems like he liked to bully people too.

Spat with neighbor on the other side of him

I would imagine this would be similar. It doesn't matter what Big Lee did to him in the past or that he sprayed him with the hose pipe. It wasn't self defense. Forget the hate for this Big Lee guy, this was cold blooded murder.

So much wrong here. Sure Higgins will do time, more will come out so we can see what the back story is here. At 78 if Higgins can prove years of issues that were limited to Big Lee it's very possible he's out in 4 years if he's still alive. The guy in your story either had a terrible lawyer or your story is not accurate. You don't do life for killing someone with a history of antogonizing you and hurting you physically.

In this thread OweO has said the killer won't go to prison and also that he will be sentenced to 99 years. Literally 6 posts apart from each other.

Disregard everything he says. He is talking out his non-functioning a-hole.

Not much of a defense to murder.

This is probably a manslaughter. That bond is too high.

I live in Florida and have never had a run in with Big Lee, yet I hated the guy.
