I know several people who have been run off the road intentionally. One of them wears his AR-15 on his back when cycling now. He said it really cut down on aggressive interactions.

I don't want to kill someone I always think there tire is going to slip off the road and they will wipeout back in the street

people in trucks will get closer to a biker just to be an a-hole. I have had cars go flying past me with PLENTY of space on the other side, yet they are about 2 feet away from me. It completely rattles you. I would say 50% of people who do that, do it on purpose because they think the road is theirs and I don't belong on it. The other 50% are probably distracted drivers, which is equally rattling.

many people drive like this around other vehicles...seeing how people drive everyday is why I would never ride on bike on a busy street

I wear stuff like this. I don't even know where to buy the fancy logo stuff. I think local bike shops carry it, but I usually don't really look at that stuff. I typically buy my clothing online.

Absolutely, and it gets worse every year in NOLA.

My pet peeve is the bikes going the wrong way*. I'm not looking left if all the legal traffic is supposed to be coming from the right. I almost hit one by the Whitney Garage last week and another on Tulane last year. Obeying the law on a bike is for your own safety.

* I got hit doing that once when street signs were down after Katrina. Rolling off the hood of an F150 and hitting asphalt will scare you straight. I landed like a cat and only had minor injuries. Ever since, I obey the law on my bike.

No my hate is derived from a bunch of jackass cyclists acting like they own the road one Friday night a month. Stopping traffic to allow there entire group to run stop signs and making cars wait.

That's probably the "Critical Mass" group rides. I'm very pro-cyclist, but I despise shite like that.

And like Boudini stated above, most of that is a bunch of douche hipsters who couldn't make it through a "short" cyclist ride to save their lives. Hell, a lot of them bring beer and wine coolers to drink along their "ride".

KG you seem very reasonable. These threads always piss me off. When I ride I try to ride either the levee in NOLA or the trailhead in Mandeville. Safer. I've been asked to ride the river road track in BR, but that scares me to death.

I've ridden with big groups many times, and I've encountered far more assholes in cars than on bikes. I've got no issue with riding two abreast on roads because most people in cars don't give you the proper spacing when passing. I got buzzed by a douche in a truck on an organized ride with motorcycle AND police escort a few years ago. Dickhead had the nerve to blow his horn as he was flying by the pace line with his entire truck still in the right lane.

People bitching about the 3" of effort it takes to turn a steering wheel to pass a cyclist safely as opposed to the life threatening injuries a guy on a bik can get if he's hit by a car.

When the cyclist keeps the middle or left part of the turn lane, this prevents you from crossing over their path of travel, should they be going straight ahead or turning.

This is straight bullshite.

Bicycles are "vehicles" in Louisiana and are governed by the same traffic rules as automobiles (Title 32). If a vehicle were to get in a right turn lane and then proceed straight through an intersection, that would be illegal. Same for a bike.

What does the "split lanes" thing mean? Is that when they come up between cars that are waiting at a traffic signal so they are at the front of the line AGAIN?

I agree with that. In the photo shown, I would stay in the lane going straight rather than veering into the turning lane and then not turning. Seems safer for the biker and less confusing for everyone else.

There are bike and walking trails everywhere where I live. I have people ask me all the time why I don't just ride on those trails. I don't think people realize just how fast some people are going on a bike. I routinely hit 26-28 mph on parts of my ride. Doing that on a 4' wide walking path with other people around would be dangerous. A guy I work with was talking about how he rides those trails and almost smoked a lady and flipped over a guard rail. I had to hold back from telling him that was stupid to ever be riding their in the first place. That's for slow easy rides, not what a lot of "road" cyclists are doing

So you feel exactly the same way as motorist do when they come in contact with some on a bike on a normal road?

I only ride River Road in Baton Rouge early on Saturday or Sunday mornings when traffic is minimal. Cars are very receptive to cyclists and generally get all the way into the left lane to pass. There are plenty of signs out to warn drivers and the cyclists do a good job of being courteous to drivers. I don't fear for my life, but I'm also very cautious about when I ride. I understand the frustration in New Orleans and I don't think there's really a good solution for it, but I think Baton Rouge drivers/cyclists have it figured out. And like KG said, this does not refer to the idiots riding a bike down Perkins in traffic.

I feel bad for la cyclists. We have so many roads to ride on here in middle tn to go as far and fast as you want.

This is 1/2 mile from my front door. I might get passed by 2-3 cars an hour on the Natchez trace.

Also, 99% of organized rides take place 6am-12ish or so on Saturdays.

We are home and showered before most of the fatties in f250s have even woken up from their Friday night drinking and on the road.

I just don't see how it's worth it, tbh. Too many people are driving while texting, surfing the internet, etc. It's too dangerous. Chances are you're going to get hit by some a-hole who wasn't paying attention, who probably has no insurance or anything worth a shite to his name, and you'll be in a wheelchair for the rest of your life (or worse).
