I'm confused by some of these

quote:

1. Ride against oncoming traffic

Do you want cyclists to ride against traffic? That doesn't seem safe at all.

quote:

2. Ride on the sidewalk.

A cyclists cannot do their rides on side walks. That is not an option. It's not safe for the cyclist or pedestrians. And the constant interruptions on the ride would make it useless for the cyclist.

quote:

3. Run stop signs and red lights

I honestly don't see this much. I see a lot of "California Rolling" through stop signs, but just as much as cars do. Maybe people riding bikes on the sidewalk do this often thinking they have the right of way as a "pedestrian", but I've never seen a cyclist just blow in front of a car.

quote:

4. Don't yield to passing traffic

What does this mean? Like should they get off the road and wait for you to pass? Go around them just like you would a slow car.

quote:

5. Cut in line at a stop.

I get this one, but I understand it from both sides. A lot of areas that have marked cycling lanes will actually leave an area of front for cyclists to get to the front of the line. They clear the intersection more safely if they are in the front of the line. That's a fact. But, if it isn't the law where you are, it's kind of annoying to a motorist. I can get that.

quote:

6. Don't use proper nighttime illumination.

Some people are idiots. I don't even entertain the thought of riding at night.

quote:

7. Generally act holier than thou.

Spandex is very liberating. You get a lot of self confidence once you build up the nerve to walk out of the house in spandex pants

I routinely hit 26-28 mph on parts of my ride. Doing that on a 4' wide walking path with other people around would be dangerous

and going 20mph on roads with cars going 45mph is safe?

Car hits cyclist generally results in death or serious injury

cyclist hits person both usually walk away

It's not paved for very long.

Typically yes if the car is following traffic laws. It may be annoying for the car, but if he's driving correctly, then it's perfectly safe. Now, there's always the risk of someone texting or not paying attention. That's definitely a risk that is taken.

I've said it before here. Cyclist hate is perpetuated by people being annoyed by having to slow down and go around them. Most all of the other "complaints" are minimal in the grand scheme of things and can be applied to other motorists a lot of the time. Going 20 on a 45 will not get you killed if everyone is doing what they are supposed to. But it will slow down the one doing 45, and they are going to get pissed. Then they are going to try to pass you when cars are coming the other way squeezing through. Then it gets dangerous. That's why cyclists should be smart and don't pick dumbass places to ride where you are going to come across that situation often. If there is a big shoulder, use it. But most of the "safety issues" are because of breaking the law (either by cyclists doing something stupid, or drivers being distracted or feeling they have the right to do something because a cyclist shouldn't be on the road anyway).

Last year a friend of mine and his wife were cycling one morning near the Alabama coast. They were in the bike lane. A young driver who had just worked two jobs fell asleep while driving and ran into them. He was killed and she was injured but survived.

No my hate is derived from a bunch of jackass cyclists acting like they own the road one Friday night a month. Stopping traffic to allow there entire group to run stop signs and making cars wait.

It can if I'm coming around a turn with no shoulder on either side. Trust me I have been in this situation. If there was on coming traffic any of these times I would have to choose head on collision or taking out the cyclist. This is in the mountains though where you don't see them until the last second. Not flat straight roads here in the south

man I was at a stop sign and went to turn and a cyclist didn't yield to me, and went straight through my turn, and had the audacity to slam his hand on my truck's hood.
Bikers do not obey stop signs and lights, and I believe that is why we see so many ghost bikes around town

What if a tree fell across the road, what if a little old lady had a stall and was standing in the middle of the road. Sounds like the speed limit is too fast for that area (again may be a bad decision to ride there 100%). But just because a road has a speed limit, doesn't mean it's unsafe to ride on. Those speed limits should take into account you having to stop for any obstruction or obstacle in the road even if it was at a dead stop. If you can't see it because you are going to fast, then the speed limit is too fast.

And I know what you mean. There is a really hilly area with a 65 MPH speed limit that people ride on regularly. I don't have the balls to do it though just in case. I'm just trying to argue that the blanket statement that cyclists shouldn't be on high speed roads due to safety is false. It's because high speed drivers are annoyed by them.

also, cyclist who ride down crowded Magazine street are the worst, it's hard enough for cars to drive down that narrow arse street, but when you add bikes in the mix it severely slows down traffic, and those bikers are all douches, as there are plenty of streets that parallel.

Those people suck arse too. Drive all slow on Leake and River road, when there is a wide two lane bike path right there.

Riding on Magazine scares the shite out of me. The parallel streets are jacked up but much safer and you get to check out the beautiful houses.

An OT cycling thread. These always go over like turd in a punch bowl.

Fact: There are a lot of a-hole cyclists.
Myth: All cyclists are assholes.
Fact: There are a lot of a-hole drivers.
Myth: All drivers are assholes.
