No, because I can safely ride on the road. I can't on those bike paths. I drive a car and ride a bike. I know what it takes to not hit a cyclist and realize that if everyone is following the rules, it isn't hard. On the walking trails I'm talking about, there really are blind turns around trees and brush. Very dangerous. Law agrees with me. There are share the road signs all along my route. I pass by 20+ other cyclists every time I ride (sometimes many more). Very little issues other than a handful of honks and cars flooring it over the last year+. I do think there is generally more of an acceptance of it where I live though. There are a lot of cyclists and triathletes in The Woodlands and people are typically outside doing things regularly. It's just not as much of an issue here and in the surrounding areas.

I really want to take a Saturday and drive up and ride some of the Natchez Trace. They do a couple of organized rides on it every year. A group I used to ride with did a couple of metric centuries on it and had a good time.

I have no problem with them riding in the road as long as they are visible and going at least the speed limit. If they are going under it they need to be ticketed for impeding traffic just like I would if I was driving 20 in a 45.

Look me up and I can take you on some amazing routes that will blow your socks off. You will wish you lived here. The trace is great but there are even more incredible roads nearby it.

You might want to practice your climbing skills though

Climbing. Ha. I rode the Tour de Cure out of Mandeville a few years ago and got into some "hills" up by Franklinton that liked to have killed me. The 15 mph S wind didn't help either. Of course, my typical ride along the levee on the East Bank had a total elevation change of like 6 feet in 40 miles.

I work with a guy that does Ironman, and he's come up with all kinds of creative ways to train for hills.

This thread is making me really want to get back on the bike this year.

What dumbass didn't know those already? The only possible exception is the going straight through a right turn lane. I would like to see actual statutes/ordinances describing that. Seems like a dumb move regardless of legality.

Yeah we have a bunch of South LA folks show up for 6gap in Georgia every year. That's a pretty good workout but if you're into pain a smaller more hardcore group does something called 10gap which includes the infamous brasstown bald that was in the tour of Georgia many moons ago.

If you're Brian toone you are a beast and do 6 gap twice on the same day.. 12 gaps.. 200+miles.

Do you know the law? I'm fairly certain there are no minimum speeds unless posted. There are rules such as you must be in the right lane, etc. But, nothing stating you have to go 45 in a 45. Just that 45 is the limit.

As far as impeding traffic. If a group could make it easier for cars and is taking up the whole lane for no reason, then yes, that's shitty. But drivers will complain no matter what, so I know this isn't aimed at just those scenarios.

seriously jealous of where you get to ride. Even the "good" roads have a decent amount of cars (not like a line building up behind you, but 1 every few minutes).

Naw don't think he's on here. He did Memphis last year and is doing Florida this year.

After I ran my first half in '14, I really was pumped and wanted to try a sprint tri. If 2014 was by best fitness year, 2015 was probably my worst. Everything that worked and gave me time to put in effort the year before didn't work last year. Prior to 2014 I had never run over 5 miles.

Sucks, but At least I don't feel like I'm completely starting over again. I figure I'll be worthless for about a month before I can really start putting in work. Such is life.

You have to think this through. Imagine you're cruising through a major intersection with multiple straight lanes and turn lanes. It's scary as frick as a cyclist to have cars blowing past you on the left who are going straight and blowing past on your right in the turn lane.

Leaves you in a very vulnerable position.. Talk about your nuts sucking up inside you.

Get back to me when you quote me any laws that are actually taken from a state's highway code. Verbatim. Then I will know you are serious and I will listen. The information on that law firm's website is misleading. To back the 'facts' up, the five points would have to have references as to which states (if any or all) follow what laws.

i.e. RS 32:197 Riding on Roadways and Bicycle Paths

I bet simply driving your vehicle everyday is nearly as big a risk.

And if you don't understand someone taking risks to do something they love you must be a really boring person.

And I'm not talking about some crazy busy road, that is stupid. But just in general.

Yes, there are minimum limits. They are usually around 15 under. Below that, you're considered to be a hazard

I'm picking up triathlon this year. If you think cycling is expensive, tack on all the extra crap you can buy with tri . I like bikes, and I'm the idiot that buys an expensive tri bike before his first race. Although I love riding it and haven't gotten on my road bike since I got it in November. Got a sprint in April, Bridgeman Duathlon in NOLA, Oly in September and plan to do a 70.3 in October/November. If it looks like I can handle the 70.3 training this summer, I'm signing up for Ironman Texas next year.

Ran a half marathon last week (just training) and been hitting swimming pretty hard. To be honest, the bike is starting to become my weakness (although I doubt it ever catches up to running). Toughest part is juggling everything.
