Violating the stopped school bus law is one of those unforgivable traffic violations where the driver should see no mercy.

Car crashes at school bus stops have claimed the lives of five children this week, highlighting what law enforcement officials call a "huge problem" with distracted driving. Four separate early-morning accidents in Indiana, Mississippi, Pennsylvania and Florida have ended in fatalities for five students and left five other children hospitalized, two of them with serious injuries.
The string of deadly incidents began on Tuesday, when a 9-year-old girl and her twin 6-year-old brothers were struck and killed by a pickup truck while crossing the street to board their school bus in Rochester, Indiana. Another child who was injured had to be airlifted to a hospital. The pickup truck driver has been charged with three counts of reckless homicide.
A day later, a 9-year-old boy in Baldwyn, Mississippi, was struck and killed while crossing the street to board a school bus. Then on Thursday morning a 7-year-old boy was found dead by his school bus driver in Franklin Township, Pennsylvania, the apparent victim of a hit-and-run while he waited at his bus stop. Later that morning, five children and two adults were hospitalized in Tampa after being struck by a driver while waiting for a school bus to arrive. Two of the children sustained serious injuries, according to Steve Hegarty, a public information officer at the Tampa Police Department.

woukd y’all be in favor of a law that muted all apps except gps while traveling above x mph unless unlocked by multiple distinct fingerprints to prove there are multiple people in the car?

I didn't know the bus was stopped. Was textn my boo and didn't even notice the little stop sign wings.
Sers, how many if those accidents were the result of distracted driving and how many were from drugs/alcohol?

We don't have that problem in Baton Rouge, mainly because our bus drivers don't let the kids off the bus in the first place. In the last 2 weeks, there have been at least 3 stories about little kids who were abandoned on the bus alone by the driver who couldn't complete the simple task of checking to make sure nobody was on the bus when they parked it for the day.

Kids who have to ride the bus shouldn't be going to school anyways. Learn a trade.

There was also the story out of, I think, Texas recently where the bus driver drove around a barricade and getting trapped in flood waters with a child on the bus. The driver was arrested.

No. I’m in favor of people having enough common fricking sense to put their phones down and drive a car. Any law you make, people will find ways around it. It’s not a law problem, it’s a fricking idiot driver problem.

I will say, in the mornings headed to work it’s easy to get tunnel vision driving and not pay attention to the school bus coming the opposite direction.
Having said that. I greatly appreciate the school bus driver who is preparing to stop, pulls into both lanes and blocks any oncoming traffic. Several times I’ve been like “oh shite, I’m glad he just did that”

Seriously make it life in prison for running over someone while texting and not paying attention. Make it life in prison for failing to stop behind a school bus who has lights flashing and stop signs extended.
That shite will end.
That shite will end.

I read about this one yesterday. They showed a photo of the pickup truck; the entire front end was smashed in. Horrible.

this. Would eliminate a whole lot of BS I see on the road daily. I pass at least two cars daily on I10 that are in the left lane going slower than the rest. They're always on their phones.
at least disable cell service unless the car is in park. That way you could pull over to check that all important FB message and your phone would still work.

This is a good opportunity to remind people of when to stop and when you don’t need to stop for a bus.
Here in Texas, you have to stop in all situations UNLESS there is a physical median dividing the two sides of the road. You can have a road where there are two lanes in one direction, two lanes in the other direction, and a turn lane in the middle (which makes 5 total lanes), and everyone on both sides has to stop.
The traffic on the opposite side of the bus wouldn’t have to stop if that turn lane was a concrete and grass median instead. Only the two lanes on the side with the bus would have to stop in that situation.
So basically, stop unless there is a physical barrier separating your side from the side with the bus.

That story right there will piss you off. Drive was white woman and kid was a black girl.
I don't know why the grand jury did not follow through, but that right there is an example of white priviledge and that story still pisses me off to this day.
