Here in Texas, you have to stop in all situations UNLESS there is a physical median dividing the two sides of the road. You can have a road where there are two lanes in one direction, two lanes in the other direction, and a turn lane in the middle (which makes 5 total lanes), and everyone on both sides has to stop.
This is not the case in Louisiana. The cars on the opposite side of a center turn lane are not required to stop since the bus driver would never be allowed to send a kid across 5 lanes of traffic.

A ton of people don't even know the actual laws - i had some irate driver behind me laying on his horn and screaming one day because I stopped in the lane going the other direction of a school bus who was picking kids up. Which, to my understanding, is the law.

You are correct. Each sides of the blvd. has to stop for school busses.

I had someone honking at me b/c I stopped at a green light b/c the school bus was stopped just on the other side of the intersection. This was coincidentally in an active school zone also where you already have to go slower and be more careful.

It’s nice living in a school district that doesn’t have a bus system.

Would these accidents be completely eradicated if the school bus drivers were required to pick kids up on their side of the rode?

Why do you conclude it's cellphones? It's more the "get the frick out of my way and how dare you tell me how fast I can drive, it's MY road" attitude.
A guy near Austin recently tried to pass in the center turn lane because someone had the audacity of going slower in the left lane. He lost control, slid into an oncoming vehicle and killed the driver.
It's not just the roads... It's in public, it's in stores. Somewhere along the way, the "stand in line and keep your hands to yourself or you'll get the shite slapped out of you" from elementary school was abandoned. And here we are.

Also--don't merge in front of a school bus at a red light, especially when that bus is crossing railroad tracks. Saw a log truck suddenly do that this morning and took away the safe "landing" area of the school bus. Put a load of kids in jeopardy because the bus could no longer completely clear the tracks. Just deal with the left lane turns.

Speaking of log trucks, this happened near Lufkin yesterday (log truck stopped by traffic jam rear-ended by driver -- don't even see skid marks).

I'd give the person the finger and point at the bus of children if that ever happened to me

This. It's pretty sad how many people think their time is worth more than the safety of others around them

The skid marks are on the driver's seat.

If I had kiled three kids boarding a school bus cause I didn’t stop, id find the nearest gun and blow my brains out

Another factor is the time of year. In the couple of weeks before the time change you have young kids walking to school and standing at bus stops in darkness. Seems stupid to me.
