In total, ATCEMS said 17 people and 17 vehicles were involved in the collision. All patients in critical condition were removed from the scene in about 40 minutes, ATCEMS Captain Christa Stedman said on Friday morning.

Considering how many people involved, that's awesome response time

There isn’t. It changes you permanently and the level of suffering is indescribable. Especially the first 365 days after. Uou wake up everyday thinking about what you were doing with your child 1 year ago.

Was the interstate bumper to bumper at 11:30 at night? It looks like it may be under construction but still that is a lot of vehicles at that time of night.

I always find it interesting that plane crashes get so much publicity, but accidents like this happen pretty much everyday in major US cities.

I would assume that at least one person a day dies in Houston traffic.

ETA: I actually wasn’t that far off. About .85 people per day die in Houston.

People getting high and driving, what could go wrong? Isn't Parmer about where it switches to the upper/lower deck rather than the single level when headed Southbound?

Yes, 35 is undergoing major reconstruction in Austin. At 11:30pm the interstate and service roads can be gridlocked. I was in an Uber 6 weeks ago at about 1 am trying to cross 35 to east Austin and it took 10 minutes before we could get across the service roads due to 18 wheeler gridlock.

Yes. Your life has a permanent bookmark with every memory and event falling into the "before" or "after" category. The pain dulls a bit with time, but it's never gone.

Looks like a drunk was the cause, shocker.

The Austin Police Department has confirmed that an arrested has been made in the chaotic 17-car crash that saw five people killed on Friday, March 14. He is now facing several charges over the fatalities and 11 injuries reported from the scene.

Solomun Weldekeal Araya, 37, has been identified as the man arrested in connection with the fatal crash in the 12900 block of I-35 in Austin. He has been booked into Travis County Jail on five counts of intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault.

The upper and lower deck split is further south near downtown Austin. This was in north Austin. The upper deck is actually closed now for the ongoing construction on 35.

I-35 thru Austin is in the middle of major construction. It is now narrow, poorly painted lanes, and has constant backups any time of the day. It really is a death trap now and I avoid it all cost. I feel terrible for the victims.

One interesting thing will be to see what the piece of shite Travis County DA, Jose Garza does with this guy. Garza is a Soros funded woke DA that has been letting criminals run wild. Violent criminals are being released back onto the streets with hand slaps and Austin is not the safe place it was because of Garza, the city council, and the woke lefty lunatics who "reimagined" the police.

That brings me to my point about this truck driver driving high and killing innocent people. Will Garza take it easy on him like he has the rest of the criminals in Austin or will he finally stand up for the people of Austin and do what's right by throwing the book at this driver? Or does Garza's leniency only apply to thief's, drug dealers, and gang bangers?

When it comes to trucks and cars, I always assume the car was at fault until shown otherwise. Decades of watching how cars treat semis, and then the dumb shite of stopping in a lane of traffic to get over to get to an exit on a high speed road is happening pretty regularly.

Who has a baby out in a car at close to midnight on a Thursday night? I already know the answer to that, fiesta!

From another article

Solomun Weldekeal Araya, 37, was charged with five counts of intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle and two counts of intoxication assault with vehicle involving serious bodily injury in connection with the crash.

Police sources confirmed with KXAN the person arrested was the driver of a semi-truck hauling for Amazon. The driver involved in this incident is not an Amazon employee

A drunk truck driver, jeez.

In a situation like this can the victims sue Amazon if it was a contractor hauling it?

They'll sue them, the state, the manufacturer of the truck, everyone. We'll know what sticks in 3-4 years.

The picture of the wreck from Univision (I refuse to give AAS clicks) makes it appear that the SUV he hit was either going the wrong direction or got turned that way in the accident.
