Jeebus. What a life to have 100% free time all the time considering the average white collar/office worker today is trying to avoid bringing work home with them and often losing that battle.

You're not supposed to use your brain dumbass. Just accept this stat as fact without thinking, then make irrational assumptions based upon it.

Yes, the 1 to 10 year old demographic is really bringing that number down.
No you dumbass.

The article says 62.8 % are working or looking for work. Are children, retirees, the infirmed… included in the remaining 37%? Serious question, does this represent all Americans or just those who are capable and expected to be in the work force?
Edit, I see that you answered somebody else in another post. I think it is a legitmate question though, the article said Americans not Americans who are expected to be in the work force. I would think those who are under the age of 18 and over the age of 65 would make up a substantial amount of the remaining percentage if they are in fact included.

15% of our population is age 65+ so that's a large portion of that 40%. Not to mention people who retired early, are disabled, unable to work for some reason etc. This number will probably grow as the boomers continue to retire.

The labor force participation rate only counts people who can be expected to look for work so little kids, retirees, students and stay at home parents don't count.

That makes sense, but the article wasn’t clear. The quote below is from a 2018 article that gives a breakdown of who is not working and why.
“Here's the breakdown of the 95 million Americans who weren't working, according to the latest figures from the Atlanta Federal Reserve, which conducted a review based on figures through September:
-- 94.6 million people above the age of 16 were out of the workforce.
Of those:
-- 44.5 million were retired.
-- 14.5 million were in school or job training.
-- 12.8 million were taking care of a loved one.
-- 15.3 million weren't working because of an illness or disability.
In all, of the 94.6 million not working, 87.1 million were retired, in school, taking care of a loved one or physically unable to work.
That leaves 7.5 million people. What about them?
Of those, 1.6 million had looked for a job in the past year or wanted a job but had given up searching for more than a year. And 5.9 million workers listed "other" as a reason for not wanting or having a job. We don't know much about these workers.”

people who retired early,
This probably throws the numbers off.. i know a few people who retired early, in their 40s and 50s (one in his 30s), and this is a growing movement in America, FIRE (Financially Independent, Retired Early).. hope to add my name to the list eventually.. if they’re including these people as ‘expected to be in the workforce’ (whatever the frick that means), then the numbers are inaccurate.

99% of retired people are democrats...gotcha. 99% of students going to school on daddy's dime and thus don't need to work are democrats. 99% of wives who play tennis all day while their rich husbands work are democrats.
This site is filled with so many fricking morons. The propaganda that is fed to this country about the number of people on welfare and who those people are is staggering, but not as staggering as the number of people who believe it. Fox News isn't news, it's opinion.
