8th grade English at MMM. Our principal made an announcement over the intercom after it had blown up . All the girls were crying and freaking out.

Alive but unconscious is the most likely scenario, assuming the crew cabin depressurized when the shuttle broke up. Hard to believe it remained pressurized, but if it did they could have been alive and conscious all the way down.

Some of them were awake, maybe not the whole ride, but it's pretty much believed by almost all those involved in the investigation that at least a few were awake for the ride down and impact. Someone even helped activate emergency air for someone else on the ride down.

They knew something bad was happening before the destruction as well. Last recorded words were prior to it all going wrong were "uh oh" by the pilot.

More like the breakup of the vehicle would have zapped out all electrical power, which would've killed the radios.

Flight recorder would of survived that, it spent 43 days in the ocean. It took a lot of effort to salvage what they did.

There was a fake transcript released in the 90's that claimed it was suppressed info by NASA. NASA was really against the public thinking they lived through the destruction of the vehicle.

EBR Main Library on Goodwood Blvd.

Had finished class (LSU) for the day and was on my way to work, was dropping off / picking up another Stephen King book I'm sure.

They had the launch on the TV in the lobby with people standing around watching. Unreal.

I watched it in person in Titusville Florida. I was in the 3rd grade at Oak Park Elementary and we got to go outside and watch all of the launches back then. I had seen a dozen or so launches prior and it was immediately obvious that something looked very different. They made an announcement of what had happened over the intercom when we went back inside.

It was a particularly big deal in that small town of 15k people, completely dependent upon the space program. Our teachers had been getting us excited about Christa McAuliffe's lessons from space that were to be forthcoming too.

I was walking out of my dorm at LSU when I stopped by the snack shop. I was going to my car. The blind guy running the snack shop asked if I heard and I had no clue. Behind him was a little 12" black & white television and it was showing nonstop loops of the explosion.

I was kind of in shock as I got to my car. When I turned on my car I thought my radio was off as there was nothing for about 10 seconds. Then, the DJ came on and said something to the effect of "This goes out to all the Space Shuttle astronauts who perished earlier today."

After about another 5 second pause, the song "Rocket Man" was played. It was pretty powerful.

On an exercise bike at the Snowmass Club next to Goldie Hawn who was pregnant. Both saw it on the TV in front and she started to cry. It was a terrible feeling as my father had been to many launches all the way back to Mercury and it was something we grew up watching in awe and amazement. A very sad day. True story.

I was in high school.

We initially heard that there was an explosion “on” the Challenger, and we had no idea the whole crew was lost. We spent all of recess talking about possibilities for rescue or what could be done. We had no idea what had really happened. No one had seen the video.

When we got home in the afternoon and saw the explosion for ourselves. It was a real gut punch.

I actually watched it blow up.

And, not even by design. I worked at a grocery store and went out to get the buggies from the lot. Happened to look up and saw the trail and thought, "cool, I'll watch this for a second".

Then, I saw the trail split up and basically end.

Walked in to the Sigma Chi house after morning classes for lunch. Was on the TV and we all watched in silence. Terrible event.

I was senior Quality Engineer for Mississippi Operations of Packard Electric Division of GM. We (not me) had worked on some electrical components for the project and the word spread quickly.

I went home (10 minute drive) pretty quickly when I heard and started our VCR recorder at home watched the explosion a time or two and then went back to work, sick for the rest of the day at what had happened to the people on Challenger and to NASA that day.

I bet we still have the tape somewhere here.
