I didn't realize until I read up on it today it's suspected 4 of the crew survived the initial explosion and were killed by the fall.
Yeah they tried to keep that hush hush for awhile and the media kept going after them to release more info about what happened to the crew for years afterward.
It's really had to tell. I think they recovered 4 emergency air devices and 3 of them were activated. 2 of them were the commander and pilot's devices. They could not be activated by them, they had to be activated by the people behind them. The pilot's was active, the commander's was the only one not activated from what I remember. So someone turned on the pilot's device behind him. If they lost air pressure at that altitude, they would of been unconscious very quickly, the emergency air was not for loss of pressure. So pretty much everyone that studies it seriously doubts they lost pressure and the windows looked to have survived the break up. G forces of the break up were well within survivability. They hit the ocean so hard though that they just found pieces of them. It's brutal to read about.

How long did it take the vehicle to hit the water post explosion?

I want to say close to 3 minutes, I will have to Google that one. That's a terrible 3 minutes to imagine.
edit: 2:45
The cabin then descended and struck the ocean surface about 2 minutes, 45 seconds after breakup (11:41:58 a.m./MET: 03 minutes: 58 seconds). The impact had a force on the crew and crew cabin approximately 200 G’s
Damn.....

4th grade Mrs.Young’s class. My first thought was that they’d float around in space until we could rescue them.

Of all the over-engineering done to these vehicles some sort of abort/eject mechanism didn't cross anyone's mind?

I was 5 years old and home from kindergarten that day. I remember being in my front yard on a sunny day when they next door neighbor came over and started telling my mom what had just happened. Kind of crazy how well I can recall that moment and yet can barely remember what I did a few days ago

The whole elementary school was watching in the library.
When it blew up, the principal turned off the TV and sent us back to our classrooms.

Wasn't Christa McAuliffe the one who was putting on makeup in the mirror when the Challenger crashed?

I walked in to my apartment in Tiger Land after class and my roommates were watching the aftermath on tv. I remember asking “are they ok?” and my roommate said “Dude, it blew up in a million pieces.” Sad day.

Kindergarten. They sent our asses out to the playground so the teachers could all watch what was going on.

Standing in a Chowhall line for breakfast in Okinawa, Japan. I was a young Sergeant then. Getting ready to re-enlist.

Was at work when one of my coworkers heard about it on the radio. Another coworker mentioned that they had a black and white tv in the trunk of their car, and I went to get it. We ended up all huddled over this little black and white tv watching the reports come in. 33 years later, and I remember a lot about that day.
