The voice of the Tigers: " I was at home on a snow day eating Cheerios 33 years ago today."

I was at school in the cafeteria watching on monitors. Turned into a bad day real quick.

The first, “where were you?” moment for our generation.

This Day in History: Challenger space shuttle explosion kills seven

Among those on board was New Hampshire high school teacher Christa McAuliffe, who had been chosen by NASA to be the first teacher in space. She was going to work on the crew as a payload specialist. The other six crew members were payload specialist Gregory Jarvis, mission specialist Judith A. Resnik, mission commander Francis R. (Dick) Scobee, mission specialist Ronald E. McNair, pilot Mike J. Smith and mission specialist Ellison S. Onizuka.

Still in my dad’s scrotum

But from what I understand, still he biggest and best example if management fricking up technical expertise. I’ve been told that the engineer reaponsible for the whole launch (can’t remember the title) was told to take off his engineering hat and put in his managers hat when deciding wether to delay the launch due to the cold. If that’s true, I’d still be pissed at whatever bean counter pushed that decision.

Watching on the monitor at Michoud along with coworkers. As we had done for every prior launch. No one was sure what happened at first . But, it was like "wow that doesn't look right".

College campus. I could overhear people talking about the shuttle launch and was a little confused as shuttle launches were ALMOST non-events by that time. Then I heard the details.

On my ship in the Med. We were working on deck when word came. We stopped and stared at each other, there were a few four letter words respectfully uttered, and then we went back to work.

Freshman in HS. TV in Mr Garrett's history class. Whole lot of whoas and holy shits tossed out around the room. Most of the teachers scurried around talking adult to adult until they all figured out someone might want to get to classes and try to talk through what we all just saw.

Senior year in HS. Our lunch break was during 4th period Physics.

Came back from lunch and the teacher told us she had some really bad news. A buddy, joking, said "What, did the space shuttle blow up?" Had no idea.
