2005 F-150: engine rebuild worth it? Or time to move on?

We bought it two years ago for my son. The no. 2 cylinder is dead, scoring throughout, with hole in the top of the piston. Those familiar with these engines know about the fragile spark plugs, which might have contributed to the problem.
So I'm being quoted between $6500 and $8000 for an engine rebuild. I'd get a 3 yr / 100,000 mile warranty. Obviously we'll never get that money back if we sell it, so it's more about not buying another truck for him.
Any thoughts on my choices here?

Geesh seems kinda high. I’d pass.

Wrong board but it's hard tell you the best way to spend your money on something like a vehicle that is typically just a money pit.
With that said if I was in your situation, I would take that 8k. Sell the f-150 for whatever you can get as is(Maybe 1K-2k). Take that 10K and buy a newer vehicle. You can get a nice used car for 10K. If yall want him to have a truck for some reason you can find a decent older once for 10K that will still be newer than the 05 f150.

6500-8k for a motor rebuild seems high, granted I’ve never done it.

What is the condition of the vehicle outside of the engine? Is the interior still good or how about the body of the vehicle?

What is the cost of a new/ rebuilt engine?
Posted on 11/4/19 at 9:35 am to Ice Cold
Take the $6,500 plus whatever you can get out of the truck as is and buy something else.

That price seems high, but on principle, if you are going to keep it for several more years, I'd do it (but find a cheaper rebuild). If you scrap it and go buy another used vehicle, you never know for certain what you are getting into. At least with this one you know what you have and you also have a new engine. The devil I know vs the devil I don't.

I'm assuming you have little to no mechanical ability? If you do, why not pull the engine, strip it down to the point of just having the block and heads on it and send it out to a machine shop to rebuild it to that point.
In the meantime, you and your son can clean the parts you took off, paint them and have them ready to put back on when the block comes back.
You can rent an engine hoist and an engine stand if you don't know anybody you can borrow one from and it shouldn't take but a day to pull the engine and strip it down, then return them until the block comes back from the machine shop and time to put things back together again.

That seems kind of high for a rebuild. I would think more of the $4-5k range for a rebuild. I do like the warranty but, depending on how many miles you have on the truck now, will you be rebuilding the transmission within that 3 year window?

Why not replace the damaged engine with a re-manufactured one? Wouldn't that be cheaper?

Sell. That’s too high.

It is high, but those are trash engines. Your mechanic most likely is looking for a re-man.

$3,300 for a replacement longblock w/core. Includes updated OEM cam phasers. Probably much cheaper to order this and get it swapped rather than trying to get a local shop to rebuild what you have. Many local places that do not specialize in these engines might put in aftermarket parts that are known to fail at high rates even if they are promised as "upgrades". Also, swap in a Melling high-volume/pressure oil pump (M360HV) that is designed to prevent low-oil pressure/cam phaser/timing chain guide wear issues down the road. If you do choose to put a fresh engine in, do not use 5W20 oil, 5W30 at a minimum. Right parts, oil, and maintenance intervals and the 5.4 3V engine is a 300k+ easily. Simply running good 10W30 will help avoid most issues outside of the sparkplugs, with those you just make sure you have the updated one-piece plugs.

Our shop quotes LQK guaranteed used motors and Jasper motors with 3 year , 100,000 mile nation wide warranties. We've never installed a bad LKQ used motor tbh.

Why would you rebuild the engine? Just find a used one off Ebay and drop that SOB in. Should be a $1-2K less expensive job. If Cylinder 2 shite the bed it's only a matter of time before another one does.

You could probably pick up an old Tacoma for that money.
