I would think you could buy a factory crate engine for that kind of money
Posted on 11/4/19 at 10:41 am to Ice Cold
You can get a used 5.4 liter for $1000 all day.

That price is too high for what you asked for. I'd shop around. As others have said, you can get a rebuilt engine for less than that.

Assuming the rest of the truck is solid, that engine for $3800 is the way to go.
That way, he's only in it for $5500 or so.
Putting $10K in a 15 y.o. F150 is way too much.

Good luck finding a 5.4 engine with less than 150K miles for that price

I mean, he's already got one wore out 5.4.

MOVE ON. I had an '04 Expedition with the triton v8, engine blew around 120k miles. We paid $6800'ish for a new (remanufactured) engine and at 175k the 2nd one blew. I sold the truck for parts basically.
I would def move on to something else. The triton engine from those years had lots of issues which I can def attest to.

Buy a Tundra and stop having maintenance issues.

The 2 valve 4.6 Triton engine from that era is one of the best engines ford has made. The 3 valve 5.4 not so much.

I had the same thing on a ford excursion with the 5.4. I had it rebuilt for 3000+/- that also included changing the timing chain. If you’re close to New Iberia, Hi Tech on Bayard did it.

I just had a similar thing with my 2006 chevy 1500. Unless you are willing to pay a GOOD mechanic to drop it in and stand by all the little things that pop up when you put a new engine into an older truck, then I would recommend cutting your losses.
You can find reliable vehicles for the $8000-$10,000 range. I would recommend that.
NOTE: after dropping in the motor and having more than my share of issues that came along with it...I'm in a new truck. Broke even on the 1500, which is fine, but I wish I wouldn't have dropped a dime into it when the issue came up.
Good luck
ETA: I spent ~$4000 on a crate motor (with all the accompanied parts) and about $500 for a mechanic to drop it in on the weekends (at a shop, not a backyard). Had warranty just like what you were quoted, but the indirect issues started mounting and every noise made me worry. It was my daily driver and decided peace of mind for reliability was more important that reviving the truck. Truck only had 100,000 miles on it and was in pristine condition. It's why I dropped more money into it after that b/c I thought I could ride it a good time more. Hindsight says I should have sold it for more than what I dropped into it and bought what I have now anyway.

Good luck finding a good price on a used one that is not ragged out. People act like used Tundras are made our of gold.

They do but there are available solutions now that make them a very economical and bullet-proof option. If the OP was mechanically inclined enough and had the tools, he could source a good used engine, make the neccessary fixes, swap in the engine and be out of pocket for well under $1000.

Car-part.com shows high mileage 5.4 used engines starting at $1800 in my area.

Hell no, don't rebuild it. Put a used or crate motor in it for much, much cheaper.
Posted on 11/4/19 at 11:19 am to wickowick
Those prices they quoted you for the rebuild are just insanely inflated. what's sad is there are some people who would actually be dumb enough to give them that money
