We flew into Salt Lake for a convention several years ago. They got 8-12" of snow that day. My wife says she's getting in the rental car and going to Park City with the kids. I tell her she's crazy. She's gone all day zipping all around with no problems. Why? Utah has plows, salt trucks, and all kinds of mitigation efforts/techniques. I don't think Birmingham got any salt trucks until AFTER this event.

I was living in Statesboro at the time. My now wife (GF then, no pics) was flying up to visit and her flight got canceled due to issues at ATL. It all worked out in the end.
Cannot believe that was ten years ago.

My family and I went on a spring break trip to New Hampshire a few years ago and got hit byu a nor'easter. They got upwards of a foot of snow overnight and then by early morning the next day, you could drive wherever you wanted with no problems. The funny thing is all the snow shut down the ski slopes.

This is flat out false.
Okay you got me. They have shovels.
Obviously not enough to keep the interstates open during a 2-3" event.

I left the office later than I should have but was able to drive through neighborhoods to get home pretty quickly.
I moved the following weekend. Had I moved prior to the snow I would have been stuck on 400 begging chipper to give me a ride.

We had 70" over 11 days recently, with multiple avalanches. Some roads still arent dug out.
There comes a point when its overwhelming.

Atlanta, or the GDOT, does have more than just shovels, but certainly not enough to deal with a storm like that, and it would be silly to spend the money for an event that might happen once every 50 years.
I have seen a few 2-3" snows in Atlanta and have been able to get on the interstate and get to work, but an overlooked aspect of Snowmageddon was that the whole metro tried to go home at the same time. That would cause gridlock on 70 degree, sunny day.
I seem to remember Al Roker and others making fun of Atlanta after that. I also seem to remember a big snow event that shut down east coast cities not long afterwards, you know, the ones with all the snow moving equipment and people who "knew" how to drive in it. I don't remember if Al was laughing then.

but sleeping on the floor of the airport for 2 days sucked lol.
My step brother was stuck at the airport too. Couldn't of happened to a better person.

I remember all the yankees at work sneering and laughing about a few inches of snow. Those were the ones who slept on the interstate that night.
"I'm from Chicago, I know how to drive in the snow [snicker snicker]"
"I only had to sleep in my car because all these damn southern yokels don't know how to drive in the snow"
Reality- all the southern yokels slept in their warm beds that night.

Luckily I worked from home that day. I almost went into the office for a meeting which was downtown. So glad I avoided that disaster.
My brother worked near Perimeter mall and couldn't get even get out of the parking lot. He walked to a co-worker's house which was a few miles away and was stuck there for 2 days.

... my daughter had a restaurant right there on 285 in Suwannee and she decided to keep the place open all night because so many people were hiking over from the interstate to get warm, getting something to eat, or using the restroom. Fortunately she had LOTS of toilet paper on hand.
She said the place was jammed all night ...
I think you mean I-85, if the restaurant was near Suwanee. In any case, there was another big snowstorm in the early 80s that caused people to abandon their cars on the Connector (I-75/85). There was a steakhouse near the interstate where Peachtree crosses over. The restaurant was fairly new and was struggling, but the owners kept it open and just fed everyone who came in. Made people so happy, and a local columnist wrote about it. Their business boomed and they opened more restaurants. That's how Longhorn Steaks became big time.

It is true that Atlanta/DOT didn't have a lot of snow/ice equipment prior to Snowmageddon, that changed after Snowmageddon. Atlanta has enough equipment now that what happened 10 years ago won't happen again.

He did. frick that fat frick.
Kasim Reed basically blacklisted him from ever stepping foot in the city limits/airport property.

Just hope they have the manpower to actually use that equipment. I'm not sure what changed in my area with this past round of Winter weather, but it is the worst they've ever done on clearing roads. Maybe it is a lack of workers, or they couldn't get in, but it was noticeable this time around.

I hope the potential forecast for Feb. 4-5 and the week after is not a repeat of this event. Watching it closely.

The interior of Alaska is bitterly cold right now, that air mass will work its way down and its a doozy.

Yep. with the blocking pattern showing up now, and the lows on the west and east, there is an increasing potential for a major winter storm. Some models and ensembles are looking at as much as 21 inches for Richmond! Watching it closely here in SW Virginia.

Did we not know it was going to snow? Why not just stay home in the first place?
