In Birmingham, they were predicting the storm to go South of the area. Meteorologists were pretty smug and calling the chatter on social media about any winter weather in Bham “wishcasting.”
The storm jogged a bit to the north. Since it had been below freezing in Bham for a few days, so any precipitation that hit the ground instantly froze. It didn’t take much for the streets to literally turn into skating rink caliber ice. So when schools and businesses let out, that’s when all hell broke loose. The city probably could handle a foot of snow but that ice was legit nearly impossible to drive on.
Now the city shuts down almost every time there’s a hint of inclement weather….which brings about another set of issues.

This thread seems worth a revisit with the Deep South showing 100% chance of snow tomorrow.
My favorite part of 2014 Snowmageddon was watching the car slide down the hill in Birmingham. Some baw set up a camera pointing out of his window. Got millions of views.

I walked out of the office to go get in my truck and there was already several wrecks blocking me from getting out the parking deck.
Called my wife who was 3 months pregnant with our first, and she said "do whatever you have to do to get home safe but you're getting home tonight."
I meandered on out to the roads and was thinking, ain't no way I can get home. Hopped back to my truck in the parking deck and remembered I had my golf shoes in my truck. I grabbed my laptop, pistol, and put on my golf shoes and started walking.
I made it, 13.5 miles. When I got cold I would pop into a gas station and grab a beer, drink it and warm up, then start walking again. That's the event that made me start dipping again though, one gas station stop, I said frick it and got a can.
By the time I got home my hair and beard was frozen and had a good buzz. Saw some great people that day, several people stopped and asked to give me a ride, or if I needed clothes or something. Older black gentleman offered me a beanie.

That was not snowmageddon. Was an ice storm.

It happened because of all the transplant Yankees in ATL that look at driving in weather as a point of pride. They always go in and won’t close the office soon enough for people to get home.
Anyone that was born in GA wont go anywhere near Atlanta if they even talk about snow.

I was in college at the time. Had the time of my life that day. Campus wide snowball fight was an absolute blast.
I called my mom in excitement about the snow. She was very unimpressed and hung up on me. I later found out she got stranded on 285 and so she just started walking, until a policeman was nice enough to get her the rest of the way home.
It did get miserable at my apartment, however. Everything was closed, including the dining halls. For the next 4 days my roommates and I ate nothing but ramen noodles, and pancakes with no syrup.

I almost got fired because of this storm. Was visiting my girlfriend for 5 days and got stuck there an extra 4 days.
