In Atlanta.
I was one of the lucky ones. I made it home in about an hour. My boss OTOH, was stuck on 285 for 23 hours.
It was absolute hell.

And Natalie Dale would get it....

Hit the Birmingham area pretty good too. I was stuck at work for a couple days.

I lived there at the time. IIRC I left the office around 10 am and the snow was coming down hard. I made it home just in time.

My infant son wasn’t feeling well so I kept him home from daycare. He and I chilled out with the fireplace while my wife was stuck at an elementary school sleeping on her classroom floor.
Good times.
Good times.

Gosh I remember that
Google maps had the entire 285 circle colored in as maroon indicating standstill
That was wild
I remember seeing twitter posts like you can forget getting up the hill
On I-20 at six flags

I got one of the last flights into Atlanta that day - they canceled all connections after. couldn't get into a hotel or get a rental to finish the drive to Birmingham. in retrospect im glad, but sleeping on the floor of the airport for 2 days sucked lol.
2 hours from home with no way to get there lol.

My kid texted me from the middle school to come get him when it started snowing. No problem. Left the house. Checked him out. Made it almost all the way home. It went from passable to impassable in 30 mins.
My wife was lucky. She drove my beater truck that day. Some policeman showed her how to put in in 1st gear and 4WD. She drove all over the damn place rescuing her friends on the way home.

I woke up in a hotel out on 285 and took a glance outside and saw traffic on the interstate said to myself “ I knew that shite wasn’t as bad as they were making it out to be”
Then I took a shower and looked out the window again and realized those cars weren’t moving and those poor bastards were gonna be there a while.

I just mentioned this thread to my wife and asked her if she remembered.
After I mentioned it she reminded me she was at a conference in Orlando and was stuck there for an extra few days. I consider that lucky. She is the type that would have gotten stranded on the highways trying to make it home and she is far from being the resourceful/survivalist type.

Did the problem start at 3:28?

I was even luckier. I had a dentist appointment that morning. Finished that and stopped by the house before heading in to the office. I saw the weather radar before I left, and pinged them to say I was going to work from home -- and they should leave immediately. Several folks spend the night at the office, others took as long as 24 hours to get home. A couple took my warning to heart and bailed out immediately and made it home before it got too bad.

How did this storm catch everyone by surprise?

It came in really quickly and unexpectedly, and then everyone hit the road at the same time trying to get home. It would have been a cluster even without the snow if everyone tries to go home at the same time. The snow just made it a lot worse.
We had one lady who just got stranded. She called back to the office and it just so happened that she was fairly close to a friend of someone still at the office. They connected the two and she crashed on a strangers house for the night instead of freezing in her car. Another guy spent the night in his Camaro on 285.

I think I was in New Jersey for this and flew out of Philadelphia on the last flight.
My wife was traveling a lot at the time and when our flight was canceled out of New York she got us to Philly. We tried getting a rental there to drive back but none were available.
I think I’m thinking of the one a few years earlier where people were stuck for a week trying to fly out of the NE.

Office at the time was off Ashford Dunwoody. I saw first snow flurries at around 11:45. I certainly didn’t know what was coming but told a co worker I was going home since we have laptops, VPN, etc there was no reason to stay. Got home in like 20 minutes but on the way decided to stop at a Greek place at corner of Monroe and Virginia Ave because I didn’t have much food so I ordered enough for a few meals. By time I parked in driveway snow was pouring. Turned on local news and they were already interviewing people in Marietta that had been stranded in traffic for an hour. Several co workers ended up having to sleep at office or in their cars on 285, 400, etc. our dumbass Chief Legal Officer lived in Johns Creek and was in his car for 5 hours trying to get on 400 before he decided to turn around and head back to office Wouldn’t have taken me 30 minutes before I turned around.

I was lucky as well.
We left work around 2. Myself, my boss and our shipping clerk all lived on the Southside and we worked in Forest Park. I live in Griffin, the boss in Tyrone, and the shipping clerk in Locust Grove. It all took us about an hour. I tredged carefully down Hwy.85 and 92 and got home.
My warehouse manager OTOH, she lived in Powder Springs and was stuck on 285 for 23 hours.
