I'm seeing a lot of this "all we need is an average D to be great" chatter and I'm hoping most of you don't believe that's Payton's mind set while searching for a coordinator.

Fascinating notion here.

A lot of people seem to think this foolishness as the sole reason we'd target Ryan

I realize that.

Consult an earlier post of mine.

I'm not saying I'm hoping for an average defense, but I think Ryan is getting too much hate. I think given a couple of years, he is going to improve this defense tremendously. I know most of you completely disagree, but that's just my opinion based on watching his schemes over the years.I think he does a good job putting his players in position to be successful. Although I'm not a Greg Williams fan, I think the greg williams type of mindset fits this defense.

Either way, I hope we kick arse

hey, as long as he is on our coaching staff, I hope he kicks arse too. But I think people are going to be very disappointed if they expect/hope for us to have an above average defense in year one with a new coordinator.

it was different with Gregg Williams because the D got so many turnovers in 2009.

We still finished 25th in total defense that year. (26th against the pass, 21st against the run).

We were 20th in scoring defense that year.

Rob Ryan is a decent defensive coordinator, but I think he's overrated. He has a track record as a below-average to average guy whose defenses struggle with consistency.

His name and the fact that he's a colorful dude get him a lot of tread. I'd rather Grantham tbh. More upside with him, even though he didn't really do much with his time as an NFL DC either.

you have some crazy auto correct going on. I noticed "Paeyton" earlier, but didn't say anything.

It's my way of giving the big to the spell-hawks who hate on those who mispell Payton's name as well as to those who can't friggin spell his name. I love how threads devolve into the "spell his name correctly" nonsense, so I've decided to just start spelling it Paeyton to cover all bases

Hopefully we pay him for more than yelling. We shall see.

His Dallas defense was loaded with talent, yet he was fired for poor performances. What else do you want to know?

It also should be said that he looks like a restaurant manager that would lift the numbers off your debit card.

It seems, Dallas is always perceived preseason as being "loaded with talent" on both sides of the ball, year end and year out -- perceived being the optimal word here.

There is alot of that too. But you can't deny that Ware, Ratliff, Spears, Lee, Claiborne, Carr and Jenkins are probably better than what the Saints have at most positions.

He is simply a name who does not produce for shite.

Mix that in with the fact that they show him on the big screen a zillion times during games.. even tho he's not a HC.. that is not a nice sight to constantly put up with for below par performances.
