Not really. Spags runs an aggressive scheme, it's just based on zone blitzing.

Ryan is getting WAY too much hate. He's never really played with a solid offense to help him out. This guy knows football and I'm excited to have him now

This is what I don't understand.

The dude has achieved real success rarely.
Mostly, he's meh.

Why are we aspiring for that?

I keep hearing, "all we need is to be an average defense."
Yes, that' true.
But we should aspire to be a good to great defense.
An average defense might be a realistic result, but reaching for an average defense as a best-case scenario seems like a terrible idea.

Exactly, and look at Atlanta. By all accounts they had a very average defense, and it couldn't protect a 17 point lead. I know there was more that went into that game, but look at the Super Bowl: both strong defenses, but offenses that can hurt you as well.

This "We just need a middle of the road defense" isn't exactly true. If the offense is clicking on all cylinders all the time maybe, but more than likely we'll need a defense that can bail us out sometimes.

I was originally completely against Ryan at first, but looking at his below average defensive ranks over the years, I'm willing to bet a lot if it had to do with being on a lot of turnover prone teams.

At times our defense played well this year, but it didn't show in the box score because a majority of yards/points they gave up probably had to do with the D being on the field a lot.

Also, maybe CSP feels Ryan's personality fits well with Greg Williams, who was more of a player's coach. Spags was not. If anything, Ryan can maybe jump-start the team like Williams did in 09, and let the offense take care of the rest.

Yeah, I mean, look at the SF game in 2011.
Our defense had average to good stats that season; but the moment our offense fricked up, the defense couldn't step up and protect the lead against a back-up quarterback.

Well to be fair the offense and special teams were screwing them over in that game, and the defense allowed them to get back into it. Really it just boiled down to asinine play calling in the last two minutes of the game.

+1

This is a bad hire.

The last few defensive possessions were dreadful, but for whatever reason the image that always pops in my head from that game is the hit to the jaw/forced fumble on Pierre the first drive of game. We punch it in the end-zone there, who knows what would've happened

Regardless, I'm tired of watching the offense do 85% of the work.

I want a defense that a team with an average offense would be happy to have.

Me too. I realize that we still have some talent deficiencies, and we're gonna give up some yards, but if we can do the little things like not tackle with our damn shoulders and just wrap up, I'll be very happy.

This. I'm pretty tired of having to rely on being opportunistic to be successful. I want a disciplined defense that can force a stop whenever necessary and not have to rely on the other team giving up the ball.

I'm not into basketball. If I was I would support the hornets/pelicans.

true story.... I heard from a friend who knows Paeyton's son's classmate's father that the Saints are changing their name to the Hornets next year. Your joke will not be so funny then

ETA: that's really not a true story. I made that up. sorry for causing any confusion.

Are you posting from your phone? If so you have some crazy auto correct going on. I noticed "Paeyton" earlier, but didn't say anything.

I'm seeing a lot of this "all we need is an average D to be great" chatter and I'm hoping most of you don't believe that's Payton's mind set while searching for a coordinator.
