It's really semantics with the wording.

They had to use 2 first round picks to get him.

Right but what some aren't getting is that the first of those two picks is a pick we would have used a few picks later anyway. The only pick we actually gave up was that second one.

None of this matters, and we have beaten each other up on this since the draft but IMO we swapped firsts and gave up a second first.

How some can’t grasp this is crazy. Take next years pick out of the equation and what happened? They swapped first round picks this year. Get it?
Add next years pick and you get 1 1st roundpick for 2 first round picks leaving compensation of 1 first round pick (next years). It’s really quite simple.

that just means you're incredibly dumb

I guess we got Ramczyk for zero first round picks

yes, it did only cost us one extra pick though

Try wording it differently:

Davenport has to contribute as much as two first round picks would to meet what we gave up to get him.

One of the reasons we pulled the trigger on the trade of next years 1st rounder is that we will soon have to pay Michael Thomas big money followed by Kamara & Lattimore in a few years. The salary cap looms large when you have stars.

The cost of moving up to acquire Davenport was one of our 2 fifth round picks from the 2018 draft and our 1st round pick for 2019.No one can say at this point if it was a smart decision or not. Ask me the value after a season or two.

When this gets bumped ST'ers will still debate the semantics of the trade/pick. So, for when it gets bumped... I wanted to be on record. It was worth it. Davenport will contribute early and often. It would not surprise me to see him have a DROY kind of year.

Look at it logically.

Something costs $12. You give $15 and receive $3 back. The cost isn't now $15 just because that's what you gave, it's still $12 because that's what you paid for it.

Davenport cost the Saints a 2019 1st round pick and a 2018 5th round pick.

ETA: Better Analogy:

I've got two $5 bills, but need five $1 bills. You've got the ones, but say it's going to cost me a $5 exchange fee. The cost to me isn't $10, its $5.

GB's pick was the $1's. The Saints 2019 1st and 2018 5th picks were the exchange fee while the 2018 1st was the $5 that was exchanged.

I was a fan of his when I thought that we just gave up a 2018 first and a 2019 first to move up for a 2018 first. Once I found out that we gave up two first round picks for him, I was done...

Technical semantics, sure, but that’s also the dumb equivalent of saying Lattimore “cost us a first round pick last year”, a phrase which no one would ever use.

So, no, we used our first round pick this year on Davenport, but it cost us a first round next year in order to move up.
