The Saints would be smart to offer Olave a deal like Nico Collins got today

Houston gave him 3 years $72.5 mil with $52 million guaranteed. With AJ Brown resetting the market making $32 mil a year I’d say $24 million a year would be a steal. Offer it to him now before this year because if he has a huge year he will want a lot more.

I agree about his attitude. He also needs to get a lot stronger. He’s a strange player to me. Clearly has #1 star potential but it also feels like he just might never get quite there to his potential.

I think the new WR's coach will have a stronger hold on that group than Burns did last season.

Bub Means talked about Williams holding that room to a standard and unless I missed something, that never came up while Burns was here. I know that's not a lot to go off but that was a different response to a question that I haven't heard in a minute.

On year 3 of a 5 year rookie deal? frick no. He's one of the few good, young, cost controlled players we have.

If he has a huge year he will want to restructure. Good players don’t seem to play out their contracts.

say he has a 110 rec, 1600 yard, 12 TD season, are you really complaining if you have to pay him in year 5? Probably best case scenario he’s actually a true elite #1 then paying him almost #1 money and gambling if he makes it. Better to wait and see then get stuck with a contract you’ll regret because “we’ll be could’ve broken out and wanted more” imo. Saints need top talent regardless.

Can’t offer an extension until after his 3rd year, this year. But even with that, wouldn’t make sense until after his 4th year when you still have the 5th year option to holdover his head

Why would we do that? Chris Olave sucks.

Tbh, and I mentioned it after his rookie season, the correct move is to trade Olave. Unfortunately he put some more dog shite on film this past season, so he has mostly ruined his trade value. We still might be able to swindle a team like the Raiders though. The 4D chess move would be to send him to Atlanta or Carolina because he is a loser.

Receivers are gonna start to get paid like running backs.
So many available each year in the draft.
Get new talent at a bargain basement price.
Receivers are pricing themselves out of the market.

I agree with all of this except for the "attitude", I think that is way overblown. I could agree that he may not like a true alpha #1 WR in the room like MT13 was because Olave seemed to improve his play after MT13 went out for the season. Is that because MT13 was a bad influence, or because Olave was being a diva? I don't think any of us truly know that one, because MT13 certainly had his issues but being a mentor to other WRs was never ever mentioned as being one.

Olave going into year can clearly improve, but if I had to compare him today it would be to former Saint Brandin Cooks. Though not the same size both were smaller frame guys, fast, good routes, and great #2 WRs but not quite true #1WR material. Cooks ended up getting traded before his rookie contract ended, then traded again & again bouncing around through 5 teams in 10 seasons. That sounds bad, but he's been successful for each team he's played on.

TL;DR: Definitely let him finish year 3 and see his improvement both as player and person. Even if you don't trade, you can pay him rookie money just through 4 years and be getting production that out performs his contract. If undecided enough to commit long term you give his 5th year option and the production value could still be there at basically a 1yr rental. Meanwhile see if guys like AT Perry, Bub Means, Kyle Sheets show promise of #1 WR potential for 2025 or 2026, plus whomever else we draft between now & then and monitor free agents.

Even if Olave didn’t have 2 years left on his rookie deal, and then the 5th year option, he hasn’t delivered enough to earn a contract matching Collins’. It took Collins several years to breakout, but 1,300 and 8 on 80 catches gets you a big contract. For reference, Olave was 1,100 and 5 on 87 catches. Olave saw 30 more targets too.

I think Olave will put up better numbers than Collins in the next 2 seasons, but he hasn’t yet. You don’t pay a guy on potential until you have to, and the Saints hold all the bargaining power for the next 2 years. Olave produces and he gets paid. He’s putting up lower end WR1 numbers so far though.

I wouldn't do any big deals right now
Saints about to tear it all down and start over after this season

Carr is not long term answer
Jordan close to retirement and Ramczyk may never play again
Kamara and Lattimore might need to be traded at deadline
Demario Davis time nearing end as well
Never understood the Taysom Hill deal either

You absolutely do long term deals on your young talent. Rebuild or not, you keep guys coming into their primes
