re: Saints vs Bucs highest rated opener on Fox since 2016
Nationwide game with a lot of hype.

Rest of the games were all down, including Jerry's team and the L.A. Rams.

I just love when posters think they are the educated or informed ones but they really have no clue

Yall realize ratings aren't a 1:1 ratio for tuned in households to the equivalent jump in rating points, right? You don't need 70,000 or millions of additional viewers to push the ratings in a big way. Literally just a couple hundred more households swings ratings big time. Stadiums and bars not having fans absolutely has a massive effect. If just a couple hundred people that would typically watch in a stadium or bar are Neilsen households, that swings the estimated viewers by hundreds of thousands or millions. If all of the variables were the same as previous years, the ratings would absolutely be lower.

quote:

The Nielsen ratings are calculated based on a sample of 40,000 homes and about 100,000 people that's demographically representative of the population as a whole. It's a small fraction of the 120 million or so homes with TV, but also a lot more than, say, a typical political poll that surveys just a couple thousand people.

40,000 out of 120 millions households. That it. Don't tell me a couple hundred or thousand in nola and Tampa can't make a gigantic difference.

1. I suspect you are easily influenced by the media or what you read online and you are overestimating how many people are "boycotting." Many are probably reducing their NFL viewing habits but those who aren't watching at all stopped in 2016.

2. Do you really think 40,000 households out of 120,000,000 captures any boycott? It's much more likely many Nielsen households that would typically watch in the stadium or at a bar, watched at home which skewed ratings. 16 stadiums worth of people at an average of 70,000 each is 1,120,000 people along with the millions that typically watch at bars. Way more likely that there were a healthy amount of Nielsen households in the millions that would typically watch elsewhere and as I stated earlier, it's not a 1:1 ratio. It's more like one Nielsen household equals 3,000 "viewers." A swing of 2,000,000 "viewers" is only 666 Nielsen households. It's a little more complex than that since they may weigh some households more than other depending on demographics but you get the gist.

Look at merchandise sales and gambling if you want to judge the effects of any boycott. TV ratings are unlikely to properly capture it.

You're still not fully getting how this works.

The areas with a larger population have more "nielsen homes".

New Orleans is going to have very few. And even if ALL of those homes tuned in, it still takes the population of the area as a whole into account.

So even in that case it would only boost the ratings a small amount because of how small of a population we have in our area.

It's all relative. Bigger cities have more "nielsen homes" have a larger impact, and vice versa.

It would be fun to go back and see what some of the boycotters were up to around 3:30ish on Sunday

Dude, my first post was a quick post from my phone. I went into more depth in my later posts. Big cities across the country have shut down bars and stadiums, that's millions of people in areas that you just admitted have more Neilsen households per capita who don't have an alternate location to watch so they watched at home. And you're right, Neilsen doesn't properly capture the rural populations who would be more likely to "boycott." I initially used NOLA as an example thinking ya'll would have some critical thinking skills to see the nationwide picture but I was obviously wrong. As I said earlier, just a handful in NOLA and Tampa can have an effect on the ratings as only 666 nationwide would swing the "viewers" by millions.

I don't know that you're info is still the way it works. YouTubeTV participates in Nielson TV market research, I imagine plenty of other streaming services do as well. You can turn it off under settings if you would like.

I think the saints game was just the game of the week. I'm not dead set against watching, I'm still disappointed that they glorified a rapist, and all this stuff they are doing is just for show. I didn't turn on any nfl games at my house but I was at two different places this weekend that had the game/Redzone on. I have three fantasy football leagues that decided not to play this year and there wasn't a peep from any of those guys this weekend. The last couple of years I've had less and less interest in watching, so I guess it's not that big of a deal that I didn't watch this week. But I was also someone that normally watched at a bar, so my not watching won't count for much.

Maybe, just maybe, it was attributed to 70,000 that typically watch in the dome that were at home watching and the bars in Nola weren't open for gather in mass so they were watching at homoe. Of course more tv sets are going to be tuned in.

But but but so many "season ticket holders" on this board said they weren't watching this season. Those are the 70,000, right?

Was the Saints game a national broadcasted game? Wasn't it a regional game? The ratings don't count every TV that is tuned but samples households inside regions then extrapolates over populations. 33 percent rise in the Tampa market and the rise in the nola market helped more than you think. The additional 10,000s in each region boosted the overall numbers big time. Most likely disproportionately.

yeah, and the ratings are compared to national games in prior years. What's your point?
