We could have guaranteed keeping Josh Hill in 2016 by tendering him less than $1 mil more but we didn't and still matched the offer sheet. And the Bears have a ton more cap space than we did then.

Only point is I don't think there is anything to read in to the tender they gave him.

matching ensures 2 yrs stability with him.... also gives them options on White now.

If they were going to do that then they would have put a second round tender on him. I think they’re ignoring that. Why risk him going somewhere else when you could ensure he stayed (no one was giving up a 2nd rounder) and only paid $2mil

Teams will often do the lower tender and let another team set the market.

Which was, iirc, only half to one mil more than the second round tender.

This is $2 mil more than they could have spent. But I was more speaking to the idiot Bear's fans saying they would match up to $7-8 mil.

They may match $5 mil, but there was no chance they match $7-8 mil.

I doubt this is a long term play by Pace. Either tender meant Meredith was there for a year. It's odd he tendered Meredith the way he did and went out and literally signed 3 pass catchers the next day

I agree with that and they may or may not match our offer. They weren't matching $7-8 mil though.

I know they have the cap, but not every team/owner maxes out the cap every year, and some teams want to leave in roll over for a future contract/s.

The way we operated on the cap (and still do) is not the norm. I want to say maybe only Dallas tried to max out the cap every year like we did.

It's possible it isn't, but it's equally possible it is

The only notable WRs on their roster are Allen Robinson, Taylor Gabriel and Kevin White. White hasn't done anything so far in his career and his deal expires next offseason.

I don't think it's so crazy for Pace to give him the original tender if he wants to keep him. The thought process is: If no one signs him, we get him for cheap. If someone does, they set the market and we can decide if that money is worth it for us. It obviously isn't a guarantee that you keep him, but it's a guarantee you get him at a price you're comfortable with.

That's a perfectly viable strategy IMO.

the bears wouldnt tender him for around $3 mil next season and a 2nd rd pick, but you think their gonna go 2 years for $10 mil? they have shelled out for 3 pass catchers already, and have been bringing in other "cheaper" FA WR throughout this offseason

they may match but it would be a questionable decision by their FO

all of this.

I really don't think they match.

but he couldve done all this for $1 mil more w/ the 2nd rd tender. He still could've matched a affordable offer, and if not, made out w the 2nd rd pick.

Another little twist is Allen Robinson is coming off an ACL as well, and White has been IR'd three times in three seasons. Is pace going to go all in on guys coming off injury? im not sure he believes their window to win is next season or even the year after. Which is why im not sure they are looking to max out their cap

Think he tendered him so low cause he was coming off that injury.
Sign him for that low tender and see how he comes back.
Why spend more than you have to if no one bites.
So get him the cheapest you possibly can for 1 year or match the offer which isn't outrageous.
I can see them matching but foe our sake hope they dont

But no one would of signed him for the second round tender.
Get what your saying why not just add a mil and guarantee you keep him.
He must of thought no one would touch him or they don't value him.
Or option 3 pace is a garbage gm and that's what it's looking like.

He has made more than a few bad decisions

Also look at it like this.
Pace is going to match and he just got Meredith pretty cheap for a second wr
2 years 10 is cheap.
But is pace that smart seems like he will match it

But it doesn’t make sense to tie up that much money into WRs though.

Meredith and his agent are without a doubt begging the Bears's front office not to match. He signed the short deal hoping to up his value and hopefully get a big contract before he starts getting up there in age. He has a much better opportunity being the #2/3 WR with Brees throwing him the ball than he does as the #2/3 WR with Mitch.
