Taylor Gabriel signed a 4 year, $26,000,000 contract with the Chicago Bears, including a $4,000,000 signing bonus, $14,000,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $6,500,000. In 2018, Gabriel will earn a base salary of $2,500,000, a signing bonus of $4,000,000 and a roster bonus of $2,000,000, while carrying a cap hit of $5,500,000 and a dead cap value of $14,000,000.

Let's be honest. They should match, Robinson, Gabriel, and Meredith all fit well together. Burton will give you a solid te, Kevin white who knows, and howard/Cohen as your rbs. there's a lot of options

They definitely should match. Its a two year deal. They have plenty of cap for the forseeable future and don't have to pay Trubisky for years if he pans out.

It would be dumb not to match imo.

Bc they have all but declared he’s a glorified WR for them

Nagy has said he’s going to run out of the slot the same way they used Kelce in KC. Kelce led the league in yards from slot and yards per route run form the slot amongst TEs. Led the league in routes run from the slot too

quote:

The U in Nagy’s scheme normally will play in the slot, although he will line up elsewhere at times, with the primary objective of running pass routes.

“You can move around, do different things — it’s what we did with (Travis) Kelce (in the Chiefs),” Nagy said. “It’s an important role. It’s a position that’s easy to create some plays for.”

That is, when you have a tight end with Burton’s size and speed, it’s about mismatches.

“So if you get a small nickel on him, he can use his size to body him up. If they put a bigger guy on him, we can use his speed,” Nagy said. “That’s one of the things I learned through (Chiefs coach Andy Reid), getting mismatches throughout. That’s what Trey does

That still begs the question of why have so much money tied up into one position? I get they have tons of cap but why pay so many WRs more than $5mil a year when they might have to fork out money elsewhere

Pace might want to save that $5-6mil and use it towards an OL or a safety or a number of other FAs in the coming years that can be game changers for them. They save that 5 Million now after already having three good WRs and put that money towards another Allen Robinson-esqe signing next year and continue building that way instead of locking up 4 WRs when they won’t even be throwing the ball that much

I think the bears match or we give them a pick not to.

Ya, what if they have somewhat of a breakout year and want to go after some big fish next offseason. Maximum flexibility is essential. 5 million is a lot for a 4th option on a run heavy team.

Cameron Meredith is 25 and it's a two year deal at worst. They could also cut him after this year if they are desperate for cap space/he doesn't come back very well.

I hope they don't match it, but I wouldn't be holding my breath.

Not directly but something like a 6th for a player the Bears choose.

Yeah once Meredith signs the offer sheet we can't just pull it and do a trade. It's done. Either they match or they don't.

If they match they are extremely unlikely to trade him because of the guaranteed money (if most of it is signing bonus). And if they do decide to trade him it'll have to be for a fourth rounder or better since they'd have dead money on the books (likely a third).

If this was going to be a trade we never would have given him an offer sheet. That about kills any trade opportunity.

#3/4 WR with Mitch.

I agree except for fixing this. He wouldn't be the second receiver with the bears imo.

And unless Snead gets back to form or we draft a receiver early he should at least be the third receiver for us.

Another thing is if you get open here Brees will throw you the ball. Meredith would have to have plays designed to go to him in Chi, and with the money they've sunk into other options I just don't see that happening.

That's another reason I don't see the Bears matching this. Paying $5 mil for a guy that's not going to have many plays go his way isn't a smart investment.

Yeah Mitch would have all he needs to be successful

If he screws up it'd be on him

2 years 10 is cheap.

He'd be the third or fourth WR there, not the second. Depends on how they see White, but it's hard to pay your fourth WR $5 mil (even if they have the money, teams like to budget certain amounts to certain positions).

So really if they match I think it sends a clear signal they are giving up on White.

They'll have a projected 57m or so to spend next year per otc.

Do they even have notable free agents next year? Grasu and freeman? I can't see it on their site via phone for some reason.

I think it's in their best interest to provide Trubisky with the best chance at improving. 5mil is a worthwhile investment.

It's better to save the money for next year to invest in that Oline and more players on defense than a third or fourth receiver.

Like I said, unless they are giving up on White I don't see it.

Edit:
As far as FAs next year:

Massie
White
Freeman
Callahan
Amos
Lynch
O'Donnell

And maybe a couple I missed. They may not want all of these guys, but they'll definitely want to keep some and then upgrade that Oline and the defense.

They also may want to try to extend somebody like Howard early also.

If this holds and we have a good draft, this may be my all time high excitement going into a season. Super Bowl or bust baby!
