Rap: Saints/Mickey have no plans for a full rebuild

Some of it makes a little sense but it’s still pretty crazy to double down on what you’ve been doing. But here we are.

From the outside, it all seems to add up: A looming head-coaching vacancy, a non-traditional salary cap, and plenty of older, accomplished players. Are the Saints headed for a rebuild?
Yet, that's not the plan at all.
New Orleans isn't planning for an overhaul. There will be changes, and likely an effort to get younger. But they aren't envisioning taking their franchise down to the studs, just like they didn't plan a fire sale prior to this past Tuesday's trade deadline. With a roster they believe is far better than their record, one besieged by unrelenting injuries, the Saints believe in pushing forward, rather than stepping back.
quote:
After speaking to sources informed of the Saints' thinking, there are several factors that point to retooling rather than a full rebuild that would entail embracing a long process of collecting draft picks and losing in order to build it back up.
For one, the Saints philosophically don't believe in blowing it up. They look at other, painful examples around the league of long rebuilds that took far longer than anticipated, some of which required several regimes (i.e. the Browns). There just isn't enough evidence for them that doing so is the best way
…
The first two games, two blowout wins, stand out as an example of what the team can be.

"Several factors" = Derek Carr's contract

Loomis's arrogance not understanding what is outlier and what is within the normal range of expectations on full display.

I know we're kind of playing word games, but it's not really "blowing it up". The team is devoid of talent and is an expensive, aging roster. "Retooling" will involve the same self-limiting cap philosophy that will prevent the Saints from fully using their cap.
Our roster is already terrible. We're at the point where it's dealing with how to manage our shitty cap and aging, expensive players who will only get worse as we unfrick ourselves.

But they can push money forward and easily get under with restructures to their top eight cap hits, including Carr, Cameron Jordan and Tyrann Mathieu.
Oh boy, who wants to restructure their contracts?

Mickey is the problem. The saints are too stupid or scared to fire him

They traded Lattimore for picks, they are doing a rebuild.
I'm sure everyone else was on the table but they had no takers.

Agreed, but rebuild =/= complete tear down like what Carolina did.
This article is just saying we are not going to tear it down.

Yeah, it depends on his definition of a “rebuild”. I think we need to retool, but we don’t need to tear down the whole team.
Let Kamara, Carr and older players play out their contracts. Build around Fuaga, Kool-Aid, Breese, McCoy, Saheed, and Adebo. Keep Taylor, Granderson, Ruiz and Olave if possible, but don’t mortgage future for them.

Mickey needs to go. He's beyond arrogant at this point. Hopefully, Gayle relieves him of his duties soon

Does Loomis have a huge buyout and that's what he's working toward.
Or maybe it's like in Major League, Loomis is told to make the team as bad as possible, get attendance down, and move the team. St. Louis Saints?
San Diego Saints? San Antonio Saints? All Saintly cities.

The problem is what Mickey can’t say out loud. This team can’t do a complete tear down because Mickey’s contracts have doomed the team and they literally cannot afford a complete tear down in 1 year. You’ll see them make changes and a move to get younger because they literally have to wait for some contracts to expire while being able to “afford” to strategically drop others

We can’t rebuild when we have the most arrogant narcissist as a GM.

Two good drafts (lots of picks…not trading for 3 players that your convinced are it) and one offseason of eating dead cap and we will be in good shape.
I hope that Gayle is getting outside perspectives about Mickey’s approach. She did that with the coaching decision. Mickey will say whatever whether it is in the best interest or not.

No one is going to admit that we are trying to tank. We don’t have to try. It is coming naturally.

That's not even 1/4 of the team. What exactly would you call a complete tear down?
Those two wins against two shitty teams are going to end up cursing this franchise as this stupid prick thinks that is the consistent ceiling.

Saints are now in Last Place in the NFL South, since the Panths won.
But, no plans to Re-Build. IMHO, they have no idea how to Re Build and that's why they choose not to.

They can't even won't even say..."we are not tearing anything down, we can remain competitive but we will get our cap in a better place moving forward".
I could understand the spin while addressing the elephant in the room.

This has to just be lip service, they can’t possibly be this out of touch. We played the panthers at their worst (who then beat us) and Dallas - two horrible teams.

Those two blowout wins looked a lot better two months ago than they do now.
