I argued in another thread I didn’t really believe he had a degenerative knee problem.

Welp, my bad, I was wrong. Damn

If I'm Ram, I take my collected millions and retire and start working on dropping weight. Being old, 300+ pounds with a bum knee sounds like a recipe for being old and 400 pounds with a bum knee.

I’m old enough to remember that this was in his draft scouting report, but we went all in anyway. #Loomising

Ironic considering it’s one of Loomis’ best moves

Trade Cooks, turns into the 32nd pick, draft Ram and get 100 games of All Pro ball out of him. Made a few deep runs. Arguably a top 5 valuable player from that class

And he had a hip coming out not a knee

I feel like there should be a medical retirement exemption for the dead money cap hit. I’m sure teams would try to abuse it, but set up a review panel for an independent determination. It sucks and isn’t fair to lose a good player due to a career-ending injury, made even worse by the massive salary cap hit. The team is penalized enough by the loss of the player.

Sarcasm.

It means this team is FUBAR. It had nothing to do with Ramcyzk.

Ram will still go down as one of the best RTs in Saints history.

Sucks injuries shortened his career.

Great player but can't stand that cuck helmet he's been wearing this season.

Some refuse to believe anything less than glowing reports when it comes to the Saints. Ram got more mileage than many thought when he came out of Wisconsin, he dropped to pick 32 (when he was a top 10 talent) because some medical folks thought he wouldn’t make it out of his rookie deal.

The mistake Loomis made again was a heavy backloaded contract when the year JV signs were there about Ram’s knee (we extended in the season he missed 7 games).

This is not a surprise. Ramczyk was a great player, but he has a bone on bone situation in his knee. Good luck to him!

I have never heard him say he had a degenerative knee problem. I’ve only read it on here and just thought it was BS until now. Like I said, I was obviously wrong

As I have posted before, THIS is a potential spark that will create a cap scenario that Loomis can't control

Why?

This literally only would affect teams who have gone to the most extreme of extremes to kick cap down the road. It's an incredibly risky philosophy and you basically are giving them an out when it should be an incredibly bad outcome cap-wise.

Just because it helps us doesn't mean it's a smart policy.

You only get that hit if you've pushed the cap hits down the road. In normal contracts, it's not that bad (and, IIRC, you can make the player pay back signing bonus money to relieve pro-rated hits).

If he can't play, they can designate him for a post June 1 cut, and actually get some cap relief next season, so its not a bad cap situation; its just horrible for Ram and the Saints' will have to get lucky to find someone as good as he was.

There are 2 issues.

1. Our 2 "go to" moves to clear up cap room are to flip base for signing bonus on Ram and Latt. Losing this avenue means that we are in a major net-negative position in just our regularly-planned cap maintenance. We almost assuredly had budgets for a $10M+ cap savings for 2024 with this restructure, so that's gone.

2. If we do a Post June 1 cut, we can save about $7M in 2024, but then we lump $22M+ in dead cap onto 2025. So the effects in #1 are lessened, but then you more than double down because we had the same gameplan for 2025 and we lose that $10M+ in cap savings AND then add $22M+ in dead cap, so our 2025 cap just lost $30M+

His knee issue was known when drafted. What makes this very bad is the big miss on Penning. Makes it way worse

Maybe the new coach can get something out of penning. Considering our staff sorta sucks, I'm not giving up on penning yet

There is something out there for extreme situations, but I have a feeling Ram’s legal team would have a field day with this.
My understanding (SFP will probably correct) is that the player receives the signing bonus with the understanding that the player will hold their end up of the contract and play the full term. Therefore, if they quit/retire in the team early; the team has the right to go after the prorated portion.

Now the fun part. He’s retiring due to a chronic knee issue. He has physicals/evaluations done annually. There is no way the team did not know about this and the potential long-term complications; yet they still gave him the big deal and they still decided to convert salary to bonuses for cap relief. So since the information was known to all parties, and the team still structured the deal the way they did, would they be successful in arguing for a return of the prorated bonus and subsequent cap relief?
