In addressing the media he made a statement about all of the draft picks. Don't know if it was true, but he made the blanket statement.

He said that they drafted the same type of athlete. All of the Saints picks were Seniors, Captains on their teams and high character guys.

I understand that to a degree, but it makes me wonder if they are not leaving a few guys on the board that possess more talent, but they are checking a box by taking a Senior or a Captain.

In favor of good players with high character ?

Sounds like there is hope for the NFL after all. At least as far as the New Orleans Saints are concerned.

I believe the question would then be how much more talent.
And the only correct answer is we all have to ..."wait and see".
I'm sure the scouting dept is keeping track of who wanted who and why.
It's how they get better.

Might there have been an 86 madden rating left and they took an 85 with leadership and experience? Sure.

It’s just coach speak.

I’m starting to think there are a few posters who put more stock in Madden ratings and Kipers big board than some of the best defensive coaches in the NFL.

I have no problem with checking that box.

Loomis’ comment would read to me that the Saints want high character players who are leaders on the field and in the locker room to continue the culture. They are also more polished coming out of college and are banking more on their readiness to play and less on potential or being combine warriors.

I have no problem with the draft.

The way I look at it is there are big school "A" prospects, "B" prospects, and "C" prospects. Then you have the smaller conference "A" prospects. I think the small school prospects become more valuable when they are consistently dominant at their position and they exhibit leadership.

I think kiper is heavily weighted on physical skill. I think character and leadership qualities show a player has the ability to play above their natural skill level to a certain degree and raise the level of play of their teammates.

The head cases with all the talent don’t play after they get arrested and suspended

Maturity and leadership qualities. Sounds like part of a good formula to me.

Yeah, these guys are about to get hit with life-changing money. You want someone who can handle that.

Well he didn’t say it’s an either/or. Loomis/Ireland have been said to have a certain type of player they like. (I can’t remember what the scale is they used but someone here will know what I’m talking about. Sorry for being vague). They draft those players. It’s works thus far. They are really good and adding talent especially in the late rounds.

Depends what they are looking for.

Think of a coach as a hiring manager for a company.

Do you want to work with someone you feel best suits your philosophy? Is a leader? May go along better with team concept?

Or get someone that others, outside your organization, feel you should go with because they believe that person is more talented?

You are the hiring manager, you have to validate your job.

Those outside your organization don't have to feel that pressure, whether they are right or wrong

Keep in mind , these hiring managers might have missed out on other talent because another company snatched them up, so you go with your next best option. This is his way of justifying his pics.

Thinking we are sacrificing atheltic ability for character is a false dilemma. You can have both if you look hard enough. The Saints are big on RAS scores and never pick players with a low Relative Athletic Score. They add character as another criterion to their selection formula. It doesn't mean they are going to hit on all their picks (no team does), but to think they are picking character over athletic ability ignores their actual draft formula.

There’s a reason the Saints are thought to have the best locker room culture in the NFL. They have been doing this for several years now after the disastrous 2014 draft Sean purged the roster in 2015 but also signed guys like Brandon Browner so another purge had to come after that one. Now they take character as the #1 trait everyone must have and it’s worked. Don’t fix what isn’t broken.

He likely means its one of their primary points of emphasis when scouting/grading out prospects.

I seriously doubt they would pass up a bonafide stud bc another less talented player was a Captain or a 4th/5th Year Senior!!
